Banned mother

Three strikes and she's out.

D.A.'s mother banned
By Allison Williams
Correspondent
LUMBERTON -- A judge banished the mother of Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt from the murder trial her son is prosecuting.

It was the third time Sarah Britt spoke to a juror, and the last straw for Judge Jim Ammons. Ammons called Sarah Britt to the witness stand Friday morning and berated her for ignoring the advice he gave her the week before.

"I"m very upset with what you've done particularly since I said don't speak in any way," Ammons said.

"I'm going to take you up on your offer not to come back."

Britt immediately left, and a lawyer defending Myron Britt spent most of the morning questioning Trent Bullard, a special agent for the State Bureau of Investigation. Britt is accused of shooting his wife, Nancy, to death in 2003.

So the DA and the defendant have the same last name? And the DA's mother was tossed out of the court room by the judge?

Sweet!

Is anyone thinking, as am I, of the scene in "Dog Day Afternoon" when Pacino's character was embarrassed by his mother showing up at his moment of glory? We all have nightmares, I think, of being reduced to an errent child by our mother's suddenly appearing.
I feel a little sorry for the DA. There he was, suddenly a child, in front of the whole courtroom. Hell must be a lot like that.

Not for nothing, but as a person that was in the neighborhood during the real "Dog Day Afternoon" bank robbery hostage crisis, in Brooklyn in the early 70's, I was "embarrased" by the shots of crowds cheering Pacino's character on in the film.

This did not happen, at least not when I was there. The area was cordoned off for many blocks, so we couldn't even get close. Believe me, that neighborhood, which borders Bensonhurst, was not sympathetic to armed, degenerate bank robbers holding hostages and making demands.

The movie was shot at a bank in Park Slope, Brooklyn - several miles away from the original scene, and with different demographics as well.

Nobody can embarrass us like our mothers can, bless their hearts.

Patricia, I like your take on it. But, you do see that the prosecutor's mom talking to jurors could be construed as jury tampering, a definite no-no, and elevate his embarassment to a whole other level(?).

Absolutely. But, that was the first thing that occurred to me.

Strikes me this would've been a great premise for Nichols & May.

It does sound like it wants to go somewhere.

When I first saw this particular article I thought the paper had made an error and reprinted the same article, until I saw that it was the third time she'd been reprimanded.

"Awww, Mo-om!"

Exactly. Who can embarrass us like our parents can? Nobody. I guess they're paying us back for the possible difficulty they may have had with us in our formative years. Payback as it were.
