O' Canada - et tu?

A mosque in northwest Toronto was vandalized overnight, with 25 windows and three doors smashed in, police said. Enuof Baksh, the building's caretaker, said people were distraught when they saw the broken glass Sunday morning.

Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, said Muslims would now have to deal with hate crimes, as they did after the 9/11 attacks and bombings in London and Spain.

"It's already happening. A mosque was vandalized. We hope Canadians will be more rationale and consider the facts," Elmasry told the AP. He said he and other Muslim leaders were receiving threatening e-mails related to the arrests.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1680125.shtml

How can this happen to such an enlightened society that does nothing but celebrate it's diversity?

Here is the list of the alleged suspects that are of legal age:
Fahim Ahmad
Zakaria Amara
Asad Ansari
Shareef Abdelhaleen
Qayyum Abdul Jamal
Mohammed Dirie
Yasim Abdi Mohamed
Jahmaal James
Amin Mohamed Durrani
Steven Vikash Chand, alias Abdul Shakur
Ahmad Mustafa Ghany
Saad Khalid

To emphasize: the plot was did not involve the muslim population of Toronto; that they were a "handful" of religiously misguided people. Descretaion of mosks will not be tolerated. The Canadian Defense Minister.

They come from a broad strata of society. Very diverse! The father of one of the men arrested is a Toronto area doctor, another father is a scientist with the Canadian Government. More evidence that poverty is not the root cause of jihad.

Ah, it's not fair to make fun of the Canadians as being soft on stuff like this. They aren't really, outside of popular commentary, and the jihadist problem being a global problem, it's going to pop up in many societies no matter what the political character of the society.

Having said that, this would never have happened if Paul Martin remained PM, astute Canada-watcher Michael Moore probably thinks.

I think Harper, who is pro war, being in Bush's right pocket, is simply following his "let's intall the fear" example, playing with alert colors etc. Then Harper can use the budget for militaries etc.

People in general are against all this stuff.

Thank you Jazzzoline. Exactly my feeling. Stephen Harper is, and always has been Bush Lite. He was most disappointed that we didn't join the lock-step into disaster when President Bush called our sons and daughters to his war. Whatever you think of Jean Chretien, or Paul Martin, at least they saw through that ruse. Already we are having our soldiers, formerly in a peace-keeping capacity in Afghanistan, killed, because Harper has decided they are there to fight evil-doers. Next thing you and I know, he'll find some way to seguey them into Iraq.

And Monte. You're right. Paul Martin would not have fallen for Bush's dubious charm.

That's written in the sky.
Next thing, they'll start bombing us instead of them from the USA. Last thing I want at this fine moment, is a bomb in my pool, while i'm enjoying a cool glass of rosé I brought back from France.

Well, then Stephen Harper will get to wear a cool, bespoke flight suit just like Dubbya's. The scary thing is that I think that he feels that he is on a mission from God. Lord preserve us from those who think that they are on a mission from God.

BTW, don't say FRANCE around Monte. He fears their culture and is still ordering "freedom fries" at McDonalds', as a sign of his patriotism.

I'm sure Monte can't resist to the sound of a popping cork. He isn't around BTW, he's got his 2 hands in the content of a full diaper.

Perhaps not, but I tell you that I can easily resist a glass of rosé! Bilge!

Harper got a free ride, and won't last long anyway.

Yes, and here we have some jihadists caught in a weird scandal. By the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the CSIS. I think you'd find the case equally large no matter which party is in power.

I was hipped to a news program, "The Hour" on CBC Newsworld by my youngest daughter. It's hosted by a very bright young man named George Stomoulopolus. He deals with hard news issues, as well as stuff that interests people in my daughter's age group, 18 - 25 or so.
Today he was talking about the events we are discussing here. He said that Stephen Harper is attempting to put us in the "fear of the unknown threat" mindset, the way that George Bush has done to Americans, for the last five years. He said that fear alone paralyzes all of us. He said that Harper should stop doing what Bush has done, when he makes speeches about evil-doers that must be battled and start talking to us like equal adults. What can we do? What do we know about these yahoos who want to blow up prominent buildings in Canada, not the U.S., Canada?
At least the arrest and detention of the 17 suspects is totally public and they have been charged with offences and will have their day in court. They will not just be labelled "suspected terrorists" and thrown in jail, with no due process, never to be seen or heard from again. We are a country of laws and these men, like anyone else charged with a crime, will be processed through our courts.
More details are coming out now. The weapons were smuggled INTO Canada from the U.S. They seem to be connected, for the most part, through their mosques and their schools. Tons of other strings to the web, all over the world. Scary stuff. But, these are middle class people. They are not disadvantaged bitter people, but zeolots and they are everywhere.

The terrorist plot in Canada is simply the chickens coming home to roost. Speaking of which, shouldn't the expression be "pigions comming home to roost"?
I don't know much about chickens but it seem like they never leave home in the first place.

I don't know which chickens Patricia. When the 9/11 attacks happened there was a feeling by some people that the attacks were a justified reaction to US foreign policy. Canada certainly must be guilty of doing something to piss those guys off enough to want to blow up Canadian buildings
