Two PBS Jazzmen - Contrasts

I heard 2 completely different kinds of jazz and jazz men on PBS stations tonight.

One was a writer/musician from New Orleans named Tom Sancton with a new book out. He was on the Tavis Smiley show and he spoke mostly of his book and life in N.O. He played clarinet for about 30 seconds at the end of the segment. Solo....a blues piece that George Lewis used to play.

Over on that PBS jazz series, they featured a trumpeter named Chris Botti with a huge string orchestra and various vocalists.

I had never heard or heard of either of these musicians before tonight.

What struck me was the the guy sitting in a chair on a talk show and playing clarinet for 30 said more in those 30 seconds than Chris Botti did in countless minutes of meandering soloing.

Botti bored me. Sancton captivated me.
