Los Angeles in August

On my way to Sydney in August I'll have 30 hours in Los Angeles. Does anyone have (a) hotel recommendations (probably near the airport for ease of arrival/departure) and (b) suggestions for things to do? Bear in mind that I won't have a car...

I arrive in the afternoon of Saturday 5 August, leave in the evening of Sunday 6 August.

Thanks!

Sorry, but I believe that's a felony.

There are a bunch of inexpensive hotels and strip joints near LAX. That about covers all the bases.

Alastair, you may be in luck for some live jazz, since the Hilton Hotel/LAX often features some fine talent. My wife and I had a great time there and met a couple of JC posters a couple of years ago. We didn't stay in the hotel -- only enjoyed the music.

The Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel also features live jazz from time-to-time, and looks like a fine choice for an overnight stay. A free airport shuttle is available. They also have a lowest price guarantee.

Of course, there's a ton of less expensive hotels available, too. A Google search will reveal countless choices.

Manhattan Beach isn't far from LAX, so it's another possibility for your stay.

There a whole bunch of hotels next to LAX with shuttle service. They're usually fairly inexpensive.
Try Orbitz and then contact them directly.

Hey, maybe you would wan to hang with some of the LA JCers, if possible. Val? Coop?

As far as "things to do", you're fairly limited without a car.

If you want to brave the RTD buses, Marina del Rey isn't too far from LAX. Nice restaurants and places to go for a stroll along the waterfront.

If you're into Jazz clubs, the Jazz Bakery [@ 3233 Helms Avenue in Los Angeles] might be a possible choice and it is within reach of the public transportation near LAX; about 8 miles away. [here's a map:http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newa...es&tcountry=us plus a phone # (310) 271-9039 and the website link: http://www.jazzbakery.com/]

Then there's Catalina [Hollywood] and Baked Potato [Studio City] although a car would be handy for these two places.
