Chris Potter, Montreal June 30th
Chris Potter Quartet / Underground
Gésù - Centre de créativité, June 30 2006, 22h30
I saw Chris Potter in 2001 for the Gratitude Tour. He was there with Kevin Hays, Scott Colley and Clarence Pean. He was a little shy with the audience. The music was wonderful! The live version of the song were better than the one on the compact disc. I steal remember today. It's part of one of the best show i saw in my life.
Five years later, i have seen him with another musicians like Graig Taborn, Nate Smith and Adam Rodger. This was the Underground Tour. He was not shy and smile a lot. I see a difference between now and 2001. He learn some trust at him. Some week before the show, i was listening the album for brainwashing my ears to be ready for the show. He open the show with a new song (untitled). The fire was on scene. For me, the ideas of the song were good, but too long.
Surprise, he made only two songs from Underground: Morning Bell and Nudnik.
If Melhdau made the song of Radiohead very pleasant to listen, it's not the same with Potter. Morning Bell was too deconstructed.
After that, he made two others new song. One call Pop Song Number 2 (unofficial title) and Boots (very groovy).
I read in a magazine (Downbeat or JazzTimes in 2005?) an small interview with some musicians and Potter were on it. The question was about the tribute album. Potter said that if he made one, he will not made his tribute about a jazz musician, but probably a full tribute to Radiohead or Joni Mitchell. If he want my opinion, Chris choose Mitchell.
He made a very very very majestic version of Ladies of the Canyon. My spirit was lift-up of my body. I was dreaming wonderfuly.
The night was good, espacially for the Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon.
Here the set-list:
New song untitled
Morning Bell (Radiohead)
Nudnik
Pop Song number2
Boots
Ladies of the Canyon (Joni Mitchell)
