This is a very nice CD from D. D. Jackson. The suite was written as a tribute to New York City after 9/11. The feel is similar to his last CD
Sigame from 2001, but on a larger scale and certainly more ambitious. There are elements of R & B, funk, Latin, Jarrett-esque country blues and impressionist classical music. There is something for everyone here -- some parts quietly beautiful and others loud and raucous. Don Pullen and recent David Murray are the most obvious comparisons. James Spaulding sounds great on alto and flute and Canadians Turner, Walsh, and Mott round out the reed section nicely. Peggy Lee and Christian Howes are used mostly in the ensemble but manage to have some nice moments as well. This is one of my favorites so far this year.
