Bistro hosts jazz camp, performances
July 25, 2006
A Truckee restaurant is putting on a jazz camp for children next month -- its second in two years.
Children will learn from some of best jazz performers from the West Coast and New York City, and their parents will be able to watch the instructors perform during an eight-evening concert schedule that accompanies the camp.
The program is presented by Moody's Bistro & Lounge in downtown Truckee and is part of Moody's second annual "Jazz Artists in Residency" program that runs from Aug. 4-12.
The free camp runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Aug. 7-11.
According to Moody's spokeswoman Brooke Hughes, the camp introduces children to jazz and other types of music.
"The children will develop an appreciation for music in general and for jazz as a whole," she said.
The workshops focus on improvisation in jazz and funk using drums, bass, piano and horns. The popularity of the clinics last year led to the camp being expanded to five days this year.
One of the highlights of the camp will be a special clinic by DJ Romanowski, a San Francisco disc jockey for 15 years who will take campers on a journey through hip-hop, reggae, soul and samba.
"This is a rare opportunity for kids in this area to have access to this type of musical instruction," said Moody's co-owner J.J. Morgan. "It's not very often that kids have the chance to get up close and personal with top jazz musicians from around the country."
The "Jazz Artists in Residency" performances start Aug. 4 when Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble from San Francisco plays a "mini concert" during a fund-raising benefit for local non-profits. Models also will be on hand to display fashions and artists will display their work as well.
Jones, who has played with jazz greats Don Cherry, Steve Coleman and Omar Sosa and such hip-hop groups as the Coup, Digital Underground and Spearhead, will take the stage again Aug. 5 for a full concert.
The Victor Noriega Quintet, winner of the Emerging Artist of the Year at last year's Earshot Jazz Gold Ear awards, takes the stage Aug. 7-8. The Pacific Northwest-based Noriega is a pianist who has toured around the world.
New York's Benny Lackner Quintet will take Moody's stage to reinvent some standards while mixing in its own compositions on Aug. 9-10, and it will be followed by the San Francisco-based Jazz Mafia on Aug. 11-12.
