Help Save KKJZ

L.A. Jazz Institute Benefit

Here is a copy of a letter that we recently sent to our mailing list. I thought many of you would want to know about it.

I'm writing to ask for your help concerning a matter that I feel is of the utmost importance. The Los Angeles Jazz Institute has the opportunity to rescue one of the last 24 hour a day jazz radio stations in the world and time is of the essence.

The California State University Long Beach Foundation, who owns the license of KKJZ FM 88.1 (formerly KLON) is selecting a new organization to manage the radio station and we are one of several groups competing to win the bid to provide operation and programming services.

Therefore, we have formed a new Broadcast Division of the Institute and named Ken Borgers, my long time colleague at KLON, Director of Broadcast Operations. Together we plan to recapture the lost legacy of the once respected station.

To make this happen we need to raise funds and also show that we have strong support from the jazz community. Since time is of the essence we have decided to put together the biggest jazz party this town has ever seen. We have asked many musicians to donate their services and participate in this day long concert. The response from the artists has been overwhelming and the event is set for August 13 from 12 noon to 12 midnight. I realize that the 13th is only a few weeks away but this has all happened very quickly and we need to respond immediately.

The following groups/artists have all agreed to perform.

Bud Shank Bill Holman Band
Terry Gibbs Frank Capp Juggernaut
Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band Phil Norman Tentet
Med Flory Big Band Dave Pell Octet
Steve Huffsteter Big Band Jack Sheldon
Carl Saunders Be Bop Big Band Herman Riley
Bob Florence Buddy Collette
Barbara Morrison Tom Ranier
Dave MacKay Lanny Morgan Quartet
Jack Nimitz Dale Fielder
Bob Summers Andy Martin
Paul Kreibich Howard Rumsey
Roger Neumann Pinky Winters

This is only the tip of the iceberg as more and more musicians are confirming by the hour. I don't think there will ever be another day long event of this magnitude.

Now that the musicians have committed their support we need your support as well.

We have set two specific donation levels to attend this special event:

The $1,000 Platinum level gives you special reserved seats at tables in front of the bandstand.

The $250 Gold Circle level provides open theater style seating.

Food at both lunch and dinner will be provided.

As an added bonus the party takes place at The Astor Events Center, 1045 S East St. in Anaheim.

Art Astor has generously donated the use of his incredible automotive museum that serves as the backdrop for this special jazz party. There are more than 250 classic cars on display as well as the world's largest collection of working and beautifully restored antique telephones and radios. He has wonderful collections of model trains, gas pumps, antique slot machines, pedal cars, movie memorabilia and other interesting "stuff." It's a wonderful place to gather for this special occasion.

Even if you are outside the Los Angeles area and can't attend the event we still need your financial support at this critical time. Our plan for the radio station includes taking advantage of all current technology so you will be able to tune in no matter where you live.

We are happy to receive donations of any amount to support this effort.

To reserve your seats or make a donation please call (562)-985-7065

We strongly feel that it's our responsibility to insure the future of jazz radio in the Los Angeles market. We will never have this opportunity again and I hope you will support us in our effort

Sincerely,

Ken Poston

*This event is a fundraiser for the Los Angeles Jazz Institute. In the event that the station is awarded to another organization the funds raised will support other LAJI projects.
