The gene in the city's jazz DNA is taking his show on the road.
No, Tony Mowod isn't leaving his gig as "Niteside" host of WDUQ-FM. He's just heading to the banks of the Detroit River and Hart Plaza for a few days to host the 27th Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival.
The four-day free festival, which begins on Sept. 1 and runs through Labor Day, will feature performers ranging from Sergio Mendes and Dr. John to Mose Allison and Pittsburgh's Ahmad Jamal.
"It's one of the most exciting things that has happened to me over my career," said Mowod. "I'm looking to forward to spending Labor Day weekend in Detroit and listening to some great jazz music. Hopefully, I'll get to meet a lot of people who regularly listen to the show."
Mowod's syndicated show, called "JazzWorks LLC," reaches more than 40 markets across the country, including WRCJ-FM in Detroit, where his audience has grown significantly over the past year.
JazzWorks airs 7 to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bob Scott, station manager for WRCJ, said Mowod's laid-back but informative style resonates well with the station's jazz audience.
"They are really enthusiastic about his program because he has a very diverse play list," said Scott.
WRCJ is a dual-format station, programming only classical and jazz music. "When we started WRCJ in August of 2005, we had zero listeners, and by March of this year, we had 150,000 listeners," Scott said. "I believe at least 60,000 listeners are tuning into jazz a week. We are constantly getting letters praising Tony for his presentation."
Mowod's job extends beyond the radio control room. In 1987, he started the Pittsburgh Jazz Society while still a DJ at WAMO. The society's mission is to educate the public about jazz through live performances, the Pittsburgh Jazz Society Big Band and the society's annual scholarship fund.
In 2002, he was presented with the Mellon Jazz Community Award for his contributions to jazz.
The Detroit Jazz Festival has more than 100 performances scheduled on six different stages. A complete scheduled can be found at
