"You are your record collection, according to new research..."

Anyone else see this? It's a story on recent psychology research linking music tastes to personality. Perhaps that's not an earthshaking correlation--and the article does focus mainly on pop music and its consumers--but given the highly self-actualized status of all the jazz listeners in this forum (no! really!) I think it's a useful addition to the literature.

The same study has been discussed in this thread in the Alley.

Ah. Thanks, Bluenoter. I checked there first, but I didn't go back far enough in the archives. Visits to the Alley aren't on my regular itinerary. (Hmmmm... Alley vs. Speakout visitor personality differences...)

If we're to go by that, I have multiple personalities...

I think there is something to be learned from what people listen to, though. Whenever I've ever had to hire someone, one of the questions I've always asked is what music are they listening to. And another question is what they're reading.

I'd amend all this to ask what the listener was personally interested in enough to actually go out and buy, what they were given and by whom, what what they listen to most, what they do when they listen, etc. Plus what *they* think their collections might reveal about their own, fascinating inner lives (everyone wants to talk about this, so it'd be easy to solicit).

Pretty soon, you'd have such a great, predictive profile that no further contact with that person would be necessary. Thank God!

If I were my record collection, I'd be much more creative, wide-ranging and far better versed in the world.

I tend to like music that's better than I am, if that makes any sense.
