I'll be out of town all next week and just wanted to remind all of you fine folks to raise a glass on this great date in memory of one of the great nights of artistic production in American history.

Thank you Eric, Booker, Mal, Richard and Ed.

Michael

Hear, hear (in advance)!

For those of you who aren't familiar with the session that Michael is talking about, it's Eric Dolphy live at the Five Spot with Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis, and Ed Blackwell. Quite a few people cited it in the thread "What legendary concert do you wish you could have attended?" IMO, recordings of it are essential listening for a jazz fan (sooner or later) and can hardly be praised highly enough. (The piano is out of tune. Tough! That becomes inconsequential.)

The best way to acquire the music from that session is to buy the boxed set Eric Dolphy: The Complete Prestige Recordings. Otherwise, the music is spread out over the following four OJC/Prestige albums, some of which may be hard to find:

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Vol. 1
Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Vol. 2
Memorial Album
Here and There

At least some of the music is also available on other labels, such as Giants of Jazz, but I would hesitate to buy it on any label other than OJC or Prestige. Maybe someone else can comment on the albums on other labels.

Today's the day. Let's hear it for a monumental session at the Five Spot!

As soon as I'm in the mood, I'll be working my way through the tunes:

"Like Someone in Love"
"God Bless the Child"
"Aggression"
"Fire Waltz"
"Bee Vamp"
"Bee Vamp" (alt. take)
"The Prophet"
"Booker's Waltz"
"Status Seeking"
"Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa)"

I have pretty good discographical info. (which CDs and LPs contain which tunes, etc.). It's too long to reproduce completely, but if anybody has a question about the whereabouts of a certain tune, I can probably answer it.

I'm already there dude! Been thinking about breaking that big, blue Eric Dolphy box out recently, and this sounds like the perfect reason to.

Excellent reminder! Excellent music!

I took all 10 tracks recorded from that night and burned them on 2 cd's, complete with ambient noises, warm-ups and cash registers ringing. The Dolphy box sadly edits out the ambient sounds included on the individual releases that Bluenoter lists above. I wish Fantasy would remaster these sides and do an official 2-cd set. It just makes too much sense.

Potsa Lotsa, Baby!

Yeah, isn't that a bummer? I especially miss the few crucial seconds of ambient sounds at the beginning of tunes.

Right! Imagine allowing people to acquire the tunes easily and economically and get the full ambience and better sound quality!

If they had to do it on three CDs, they could fill up the third CD with something else. But it sure as hell wouldn't take four CDs.

Anyone have the new OJC reissue of this/these? I just saw it yeaterday at the store and wanted to know how they sounded. And yes the ambient noise is essential.

I think both nights (or at least one) of the Five Spot sessions is on Emusic.

All of the recording at the Five Spot was done on one night. (There isn't a second night.)

Michael--Do you remember what you saw at the store? Was it a reissue of one of the previous single albums or what?

Tanager, all of the original albums are on Emusic:

Five Spot Vols. 1 & 2
Memorial Album
Here & There

I don't know, however, if there are any tracks on the Dolphy box set that aren't on the current versions of those albums.

Yeah. . .single reissue in fancy paper package of Vol. 2, thus I assume they reissued each of the three discs individually. It boasted of better sound and all that. I'm not one to upgrade discs on the basis of sonic improvements, but this one is pretty special to me., Report please anyone who's heard these.

Pete--It might be the other way around, if I understand you correctly. Anyway, the tracks from the Five Spot session that are in the boxed set are the 10 tracks listed in #3:

"Like Someone in Love"
"God Bless the Child"
"Aggression"
"Fire Waltz"
"Bee Vamp"
"Bee Vamp" (alt. take)
"The Prophet"
"Booker's Waltz"
"Status Seeking"
"Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa)"

Yes, Rita--us owners of the individual discs and not the box do not have "God Bless the Child" nor "Status Seeking"

The Dolphy Box has nothing new. I used to have a 3 LP set called The Great Concert of Eric Dolphy and that didn't even have all 10 tracks.

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, vol. 1

  • Fire Waltz
  • Bee Vamp
  • The Prophet
  • Bee Vamp (alternate) (CD Only)

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, vol. 2

  • Aggression
  • Like Someone In Love

Eric Dolphy and Booker Little - Memorial Album

  • Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa)
  • Booker's Waltz

Eric Dolphy - Here and There

  • Status Seeking
  • God Bless the Child

Plus 3 other tracks not from the Five Spot.

You don't need to get the box.

The Great Concert set was really just the original Vol 1 & 2 and Memorial Album lps packaged as a box--no Bee Vamp alternate and no Here & There material.

Michael--The reason that you don't have "God Bless the Child" and "Status Seeking" is that there are four individual discs that contain Five Spot material, not three. The fourth, which contains those two tunes, is Here and There (which Pete reports is on eMusic). (Edit: I see that Jim covered this.)

The music is pretty special to me too, but I already sold Vol. 1 when I bought the box. I'll rebuy the material if Fantasy comes out with an economical package with better sound and ambient noise, but not otherwise.

I like the Prestige studio albums well enough, but they don't bowl me over. A bit too straight ahead for me. I prefer Dolphy's contemporaneous work with Mingus & Trane. I think Iron Man & Out to Lunch are Dolphy's 2 great studio albums.

Btw, does the Dolphy box also include Waldron's "The Quest'?

I really enjoy that part of his career as well. I would love to see Mosaic (or some other label) do a complete Mingus 1964 tour box set. I doubt it'll happen unless some very persuasive person could talk Sue into it. Who knows? She did release half of the Paris shows.

"Can anybody here remember what they were doing that night?" - Walto

    Hangin out with dad.

"Btw, does the Dolphy box also include Waldron's "The Quest'?" - Pete

YES! And for me personally, it might just be the highlight of the entire box. Such a beautiful album. Ron Carter's Where? is also part of the box. Another GREAT album.

"You don't need to get the box." - Jim Dye

Yeah, but why wouldn't you? Of course, I'm a huge Dolphy fan, so that may be clouding my judgment here. But the booklet has some incredible photos, the liners are outstanding, and if it weren't for that awful Caribe' album being in there, this set would be flawless musically.

Jim, do you have the video, from Oslo? It's unfortunately out of print. Someone is selling it on Amazon marketplace for $39.95.
