New York

Well, I just got back from New York. It was the best trip I've ever been on, and probably the most valuable. I was out every night I was there, and saw a total of 15 different groups.
I was so happy when I was there, man. I saw people like Michael Blake, Joe Lovano, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Steven Bernstein, Ben Allison, Brian Blade...that stuff was soo crazy, man, I'm still in shock. I don't remember going to sleep before 2:00 AM at all.
Man that was a good time.
Like, in Texas, you'll never turn around and see Stanley Crouch just standing there, hanging out, y'know, all like "Hey, I'm Stanley Crouch."
Man.
Only in New York.
That was so cool.

That's great, Thelonious! I hope you'll write about some of your experiences in the Live Music Revews forum.

(I feel like reminding everybody what your age is, but I don't want to embarrass you.)

Dennis--Take a look at what T-Funk wrote about herself in #31 in the Stop Here and Say Hello First thread at the top of Speak Out.

T-Funk--Forgive me for asking, but do you know that Dennis is a Dallas-based trumpeter/composer/leader with his own thread here, Ask Dennis González (in the Ask the Musicians forum)?

So I've heard--and read, for that matter-

Dennis, do you have any regular gigs here or anything? (this might be a dumb question, I'm not sure)

Hélas, you are 15, which means you attend high school (probably) somewhere in the Dallas area. I teach high school in Dallas. Probably some of my colleagues or even relatives have taught you or know you. It's rare that someone your age listens to jazz, and I play in the Dallas area to the few 15-year-olds who'll listen to it. Jmilazzo, who is a JC'er, is from Dallas, and a great writer. Jonathan Sutton is a great supporter of the music and he lives here as well. You don't have to say anything about yourself...I was just pleasantly surprised.

Do you play an instrument?

Cool
Yeah I play guitar-one benefit of visiting New York was that I got to go check out the New School and Berklee-and flute, and I'm working on the piano.
Your right that I'm in high school-the best one, in my opinion, for one who wants to learn all about jazz-I'll be a sophomore this year.

Seems to me that would be one of the better things about Texas.

Be that as it may...

I'm not sure where that statement was going.

T-Funk, many of us think Stanley Crouch is a very negative writer, though he purports to support jazz. So when you praised New York in your thread-opener, we were in agreement with you and very happy that you had a good time and got to see Ornette and Brian Blade and all those people you can't see in Texas. But then your last statement, "Like in Texas, you'll never turn around and see Stanley Crouch just standing there, hanging out, y'know, all like 'Hey, I'm Stanley Crouch.'" Many of us feel that it is an advantage...no Stanley Grouch...er, Crouch, in our midst.

That's where that statement was going!

tf, this has now become my favoite quote! i may add it to my sig file. partially because it's so true and partially because of the way you wrote it.

i'm glad you enjoyed your visit here and saw LOTS of music. as many here have said, it's very encouraging to us old farts..err.. jazz fans/musicians to see young people embrace the music with such passion.

Question

Tfunk, I'm glad you had such a good time in NYC. I see Stanley all the time just "hanging around". I'm actually one of the few people on the board who like him. I don't always agree with what he says but I've always had a good time talking to him.

Now, when are you going to tell us all about your trip? We want details!
