We went down to this show earlier today, and got there right before the New Cookers' set. The band's name is dedicated to the Freddy Hubbard album Night of the Cookers, which included Lee Morgan. Night of the Cookers was recorded live, in 1965, at the Club La Marchal, Brooklyn.

The New Cookers are excellent, and I hope that they are going to record soon. I ran into (trumpeter) Kenyatta Beasley in the mall after the show, and told him that we'll be seeing more of their band. It's refreshing to see young people that are committed to good jazz, and have studied the greatest players' styles to help form their own sound, which this group has obviously done. They closed the day's set with a rousing version of Caravan. It was very apparent that the New Cookers have done their woodshedding. See them if you get a chance - they burn!.
