New Orleans remains battered and bruised a year after Hurricane Katrina, but its spirit is invincible.
You don't have to travel to the Mississippi Delta to find that out. Many of Louisiana's finest musicians will be in
Detroit this weekend for the annual International Jazz
Festival.
New Orleans' distinctive beat will resonate throughout the weekend, from C.J. Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band on Friday, to Buckwheat Zydeco on Saturday, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha-Chas on Saturday and BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Dr. John & Lower 911 on Monday. The Regal Brass Band of New Orleans acts as the festival's house band this year; it's the only band to perform three of the festival's four days.
Of course, you won't be able to miss the fact that Detroit has its own rich musical heritage. The Funk Brothers, the men who backed up many of Motown's hits, will perform Friday night, just before Motown's Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards. Lewis Nash will head a tribute to one of Detroit's finest jazz pianists, the late Tommy Flanagan. Another of Detroit's legendary pianists, Barry Harris, will join the Detroit Jazz All-Stars, along with Curtis Fuller, Louis Hayes, Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whitaker and Charles McPherson.
The festival lives up to its international name with appearances by Oscar Castro-Neves, Sergio Mendes Brasil 2006 and Brasil Brazil featuring Ana Gazzola & Sonia Santos.
And it offers an evolving blend of music that goes beyond jazz, including blues masters such as Taj Mahal and Mose Allison, folk musician Richie Havens and pop/soul singer Joan Osborne.
The Music Hall Jam Academy Stage features the state's finest high school jazz bands, and the Family Jazz Stage offers a blend of storytelling and music for youngsters. A Musical Maze, an instrument "petting zoo" and giant puppets, also will entertain the kids.
