Tony Bennett on America

TONY BENNETT: 'AMERICA IS CULTURALLY VOID'

Legendary singer TONY BENNETT has slammed his home country of America for not contributing anything other than jazz music to world art and culture. The IF I RULED THE WORLD crooner feels that Europe and Asia offer far more culturally than America does. Bennett says, "I have travelled around the world to Asia and Europe. They show you what they have contributed to the world. The British show you theatre, the Italians show you music and art, the French show you cooking and painting, and the Germans show you science. "The only thing that the United States, which is still a young country, has contributed culturally to the world is jazz - elongated improvisation. It's tragic." And Bennett feels that Americans don't even appreciate the impact of jazz in popular culture. He says, "Fifty years from now people will be bowing to DIZZY GILLESPIE and CHARLIE PARKER, just like impressionist painters like MONET, who were starving in their day. The Americans don't even know what they have come up with

Tony has a point. But let me add: The Broadway musical, country music and uh...

Bar-b-que isn't art. I know, some folks may disagree...

With all due respect, none of the above come close to matching jazz as a major contribution to world culture, though American cinema comes close.

A good deal of developments in Post-WWII art are American innovations.

I think Tony makes a decent point.
Agreed movies, and a little music besides jazz..... but a point he has.

Dance is an art form. You may not appreciate it, but you can't deny it.

What Pete C and Peterdubya said in posts #5 & 8.

It's not as if Tony Bennett shouldn't have an opinion, perspective or voice on matters such as these. Of course it's not simple, but Tony never suggested that it was, either.

No respect for Tony Bennett?

But that's just the tip of the iceberg....

Both Lindy Hop and BBQ are African contributions to culture.

The blueprint for filmaking can be attributed to a Brit named George Horner, who invented the zoetrope.

Art and architecture? For starters - and there is so much more - check out Charles Rennie Mackintosh and/or the Glasgow School of Art.

On the surface, you are quite right. But one could argue that today's country music is really the grandchild of chanties, dance music and folk songs written in England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Poland (think waltzes, schottiches and polkas) in the 1700's - 1800's....and the Broadway musical has distinct ties to the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan as well as the decidedly middle European early Yiddish Theater.

...well I for one love the music of Tony Bennett....what can one really expect from the old man who just turned 80 years....he surely forgot his architecture regarding the Art Deco movement (instigated in France but America was its epicentre i.e. FLW).

I suppose poor Tony never got an opportunity to pick up a Marvel or DC comic book from the barber shop window ledge either....

Bilbao anyone?

It was an American who traveled to Spain to design Bilbao, a wonderful artful, artistic shining marvel. Frank Gehry, he is being over looked?

We have innovative and talented architects ones which others around the world look to for inspiration.

Our fine arts haven't stood still, they are at the forefront of what is being done today, in ceramics, in painting, in sculpting, in any number of artistic endeavors we are oftentimes leading the movements. Granted, the impressionists made new art seem trite at times.

How about our glass blowers, our glass artists. I think Tony Bennet needs to look about a bit more, as we have much to offer. There's some very talented people out there.

There are so many artists and architects whose works are inspiring and at the top of the ladder. It's not not just our fantastic jazz men and women. We're a diverse country with talent to spare.
