Doubt you'll find them here, though he's better live than any of his recordings thus far, except for the set with Charles Earland.

If Only for One Night
Charles Earland/Najee

Reviewby Scott Yanow
Less than two months before his sudden death, Charles Earland recorded this final rewarding effort. One of the most inventive of the organists to come up after Jimmy Smith, Earland contributed five originals to the set and shows that one can play funky and still be creative and unpredictable. The main surprise of the outing is that Najee, a saxophonist best known for his R&B-ish/crossover records, fits in quite well to the hard bop and soul-jazz jams. Also in fine form as a soloist is underrated guitarist Melvin Sparks. Earland sounds inspired by his sidemen and is heard in excellent form this one last time.

Question

Looking for Najee tickets on a jazz board is a bit of an oxymoron, isn't it?

Kay just wanted the info and surfed her way here..........it sounds important to her.

I saw him at a George Wein summer festival in Saratoga Springs, NY many years ago. He was nearly forgettable.........to me an attempt to be another Grover who was still very much alive at the time, and did not need replacing.

Your suggestion in post #4 was probably the best, Mike.

I have no axe to grind with Kay. Having said that, a few more details with respect to date, time and place for such inquiries would be useful in the future.

It would appear that Najee is in Washington D.C. from Sept. 7-10 at Blues Alley.

"Forgettable" is probably a reasonable identifier for a Najee performance.

Kay--

Try calling Blues Alley and see whether they'll take a reservation over the phone for the 8 p.m. Friday show. Also, ask them whether any stores are serving as ticket outlets, and if so, try to get the addresses or phone numbers of a couple of those stores. If you're not in town now, try to get to town early.

You could also check the Tickets classifieds in the Washington Post, Washington City Paper, and Washington, DC craigslist. (Free registration may be required for the Wash. Post's site.)

Edit: There's nothing in the DC craigslist now, but keep checking. The easy way is to just do a search for "Najee" there. In fact, place an ad in
the Tickets section of the DC craigslist. It's free. Hurry up!

Thanks to the people that were trying to be helpful.
I need tonight (friday night at 8PM). And yes I have googled every possible way and looked up every possible ticket seller as well as contact Blues Alley.
I thought maybe someone here would have tickets and would be willing to sell them.

Kay, there aren't many fans of "smooth jazz" at this BBS. George Bush's popularity rating here is higher than Kenny G's or Najee's.

I saw him once, for free I'll gladly admit, and he did impress me with his chops. He may have been trying a little harder since it was at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. Though most of his stuff is heavy-handed funk, his "Songs From the Key of Life" cover album is worthwhile, at least according to me and Scott Yanow.

Songs from the Key of Life
Najee

Reviewby Scott Yanow
Throughout his career, saxophonist Najee has generally performed crossover music that mixes R&B, jazz, and pop. This particular date is one of his strongest and most jazz-oriented, a well-conceived tribute to Stevie Wonder. Najee (heard on soprano, flute, alto, and tenor) plays instrumental versions of the music from Wonder's famous Songs From the Key of Life album, plus several other notable Wonder songs. Assisted by such players as keyboardists George Duke, Ronnie Foster, and Herbie Hancock; guitarist Phil Upchurch; and a top-notch horn section, Najee creates fresh renditions of 21 Stevie Wonder tunes. Highlights include "Love's in Need of Love Today," "Sir Duke," "Knocks Me off My Feet," "If It's Magic," and a medley of "All Day Sucker" and "Easy Goin' Evening." Throughout the memorable set, Najee shows that he can be a strong jazz improviser while still remaining accessible. Recommended.
