TV Moms
One of my Advanced Speech students is doing a speech about the evolution of the TV Mom....maybe you can help us.
Name the TV Moms you remember from your past or those from today's televison shows.
Animation is OK.

Cybil Sheppard. Don't remember what the character's name was, though. It was Cybil also, wasn't it?

Marge Simpson
Mrs. Cleaver
The more I think about this the more I remember family sitcoms that were sans mom. My Three Sons, The Courtship of Eddie's Father and a bunch of others.

I don't know something really crazy like a year's supply of Twizzlers. Something like that. Except I don't like Twizzlers.
I was thinking of My Three Sons too.

Let's see, if we're talking evolution, then you have to go with something like:
June Cleaver, Leave It To Beaver
Edith Bunker, All in the Family
Clair Hanks Huxtable, The Cosby Show
Roseanne Conner, Roseanne
Marge Simpson, The Simpsons
Lois Griffin, Family Guy
People who watch tv more than I do can fill in the blanks. But those six right there show a lot of change in how mothers have been portrayed on television.

No one's mentioned Elizabeth Montgomery? Or is she disqualified because she was the main character?

One of the most underrated hotties of all time!
Would it be inappropriate to turn this into a "tv moms I had sexual fantasies about" kind of thread?
If so, I will digress.

Well, that covers that.
Let's hear the speech.
"Back in the golden days of television in the 50s and early 60s, almost all of the TV Moms were white and middle to upper middle class.
In the late 60s, as our society began to change, some non-white Moms began to appear, such as Diahann Carroll on "Julia". Other Moms became single parent Moms with no husbands or long gone husbands.
Women's Lib exerted it's power and the tv Moms began to become aggressive and somewhat obnoxious, like the overbearing Maude and the somewhat skanky Linda Lavin who worked in a greasy spoon slinging hash to fat assed truckers who would try to grab her ass.
In our modern world, there are many types of Moms on TV. Since they are on TV now, I won't bother to name them.
Next season will feature a series about unwed teenage moms who work at strip clubs.
In closing, the TV Mom has evolved a lot over the years - from respectable and stylish like Margaret Anderson of "Father Knows Best", to gross and crude like Roseanne, to bumping and grinding like 15 y/o Misty-Ann on "Unwed Moms Who Strip".
Thank you.

the only mom that i really loved for her kindness to mankind was Edith bunker. Jean Stapleton.
she wasn't a raving beauty, or had a great shape like most of the moms mentioned. she had a loving heart to her husband, daughter, son-in-law and grandson. yet she was called dingbat.
even through all the obstacles of being married to Archie,
when he always made a ass of himself she defended him to the world.
that's all.
