Pat Metheny / Brad Mehldau - Metheny Mehldau collaboration

I'm anxious to heard those two discs. Here what i saw on Pat's Web Site:

"This past December Pat and pianist Brad Mehldau teamed up for a long discussed and highly anticipated joint project together. Meeting in a New York recording studio for a week, the two musicians each arrived with an armful of new tunes written just for this occasion along with a few older pieces by both. The six day session resulted in what Pat has called "one of the most truly inspiring and satisfying collaborative oocasions I have ever experienced". Look for two releases over the next year featuring Metheny/Mehldau duets and performances of Pat with the Brad Mehldau Trio (featuring Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard). Watch for tour dates in the US and Europe in the first half of 2007." - Pat Metheny Web's Site

This could be good stuff. I love Metheny when he's not playing with the Pat Metheny Group.

Thanks for alerting us to this, Freetoojazz. These could be very interesting--especially if the announced trio + Metheny CD is recorded during their concert tour.

The link could have been Larry Grenadier, who is part of the Mehldau trio since forever and also spent a couple of years with the Metheny trio along with Bill Stewart. One of my favorite bassists.

Too bad Meldhau is playing with Metheny -- who in my judgment plays way too many notes. I would prefer to hear him with Jim Hall, who made those great recordings with Bill Evans.

To be fair, Mehldau is very often guilty of exactly the same thing. Maybe they should call the album "Jittery Fingers."

With the gushing praise from someone who tells like he sees it, this has got to be a home run!

I breezed by this comment before and disagree thoroughly.

Meldhau is very introspective in his approach, the opposite [if I understand] of the critique above.

Look for the CD the last week of August 2006. The music features Metheny/Mehldau duets.

The songs!

Here the set list of the disc and a short text that I found on the Nonesuch Web Site:

Unrequited
Ahmid-6
Summer Day
Ring Of Life
Legend
Find Me In Your Dreams
Say The Brother's Name
Bachelors III
Annie's Bittersweet Cake
Make Peace

For Brad Mehldau, this collaboration started at that "life-changing moment" when, as a 13-year-old, a friend played him "Are You Going With Me" from the Pat Methany Group's 1982 live double-album, Travels. Years later, Pat Methany heard "Chill" from saxophonist Joshua Redman's 1994 album Moodswing that featured Brad Mehldau on piano. Since, the two artists have forged an artistic partnership based on shared inspiration, not just mutual admiration. This album features music by both Methany and Mehldau, and was recorded at Right Track Studio (NYC) in December of 2005.

Two Sound Clip

I try to find a place where we can listen some piece to have an idea of the music. It's very hard to find. I find a French site where we can listen only two songs (30 sec.) "Ring of Life" and "Say the Brother's name"

Here the link:

http://www.radiofrance.fr/chaines/fi...p?id=130000042

If someone know where we can listen the whole album with sound clip, don't hesitate to post.

Thanks!

More sound clip!

Yesterday, the sound clip where not available at Amazon. Now, you can listen all the track ( 1 min.)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...535905?ie=UTF8

It seems that it is a Metheny approach.

Metheny Mehldau (Nonesuch, 2006)

When i heard that these two greats artists made a record together, i smile during a week. I was happy! Time as passed and i was expecting buying it last week. Deception, the cd was not available. I was angry.

It's a wonderful day for me. The weather is grey, only clouds. No sun at all. Happy! Yes, The Metheny/Mehldau is now in store. People who live in others countries, you have it since a week. I skip my lunch break to go to a record store far away from my office. It took an hour and a half to have it in my hands. Crazy, yes i am.

After listen it once, i think it's worth it. It seems that Metheny got the leading role. The two tracks with the trio of Mehldau are just fantastic. It's promising. I reconize the touch of both. Two big spirits melting in one. The next one will be a full disc of it (with the trio).

Did someone want to share something about it? Do you enjoy this music?

It's gotten a glowing review on Amazon. I listened to 1-minute samples, and it sounds pretty good.

Metheny has done some superb work in intimate duo settings--most memorably "Beyond the Missouri Sky" (w. Haden) and "Jim Hall/Pat Metheny." If it lives up to that standard, then it's very fine.

I'd just like to say that I believe the new trio between Mehldau, Ballard and Grenadier stand best on their own....three's company and all that....don't get me wrong, I'm an 'old' and ardent fan of Metheny's but after listening to the trio's 'Day is Done' release of 2005....I would have to say that this is a new standard in jazz music that does not benefit from the masters guitar....

I just got a copy of the CD, and I really like what I have heard.
The whole CD is Metheny/Mehudau duos, 2 songs add Grenadier and Ballard.

I will have more things to say soon.

Metheny Mehldau Quartet (Nonesuch - 2007)

I just bought it this week. I love it! I'm surprise that nobody talk about it in this forum!

If you want to know more about this good disc, here some reviews:

"The musical magic established by that collaboration sets the stage for the pair to dig deeper here..."http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p...0:8se67u50h08g

"What makes Quartet beg comparison to the Metheny Group's Quartet is its relatively minimal production..."http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=24966

"...each tune has a great deal to say on its own merit..."http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=24910

I downloaded the two quartet tunes from the first Metheny Mehldau CD. I like them quite a bit. I'll get the quartet CD the next time I buy CD's. Peace.

Both are pretty good albums IMHO, after having had them a couple of years, and taking them out periodically. The group tracks on the Duo album are dynamite, funnily enough, but over all Metheny & Mehldau are a great team. Not quite up to Hall & Evans though, but then how could they be? I mean Undercurrents is one of The Great albums...
