For Jews and Muslims, a period of reflection begins this weekend
Rosh Hashanah tonight and tomorrow, Ramadan I believe on Sunday. Self-examination, repentence, hopefully forgiveness and a clean slate for the coming year.
As I examine myself, I hope Jews and Muslims do likewise throughout the world, as individuals, as peoples, as nations.
We can all do better. I'll start with me.
Sound the shofar!

In other news, us Atheists and Agnostics get to ignore all of our faults and WATCH SOME FOOTBALL!
No, seriously, Happy Reflecting, Jason.

No sweat. Patriots play Sunday night so I'm clear!
Best part of the holiday: Apples and honey for a sweet new year. Yum!
Most challenging part: I'm in the temple choir as a baritone, and really I'm a tenor, and some of this music is hard - especially for a drummer who doesn't read music!

Orthodox and Conservative Jews also observe a second day of Rosh Hashanah.

Hetty is having afternoon tea in a Hendon cafe. On an adjacent table, Mary is also having tea. Mary leans over towards Hetty and says, "Excuse me asking, but are you Jewish?"
"Why yes I am," replies Hetty.
"I thought so," says Mary, "you have a Jewish holiday this week, don’t you?"
"Yes we do, it’s called Rosh Hashanah."
"Is that when you light a different coloured candle every night?" asks Mary.
"Oh no," says Hetty, "that's Chanukah."
"Then is it the one when you’re not allowed to eat any bread?" asks Mary.
"No, that's Passover," says Hetty, "Rosh Hashanah is when we blow the Shofar."
"That's really nice," says Mary, "that's what I admire about you Jewish people – you’re so good to the staff."

I wonder what they'll come up with when they're done with their reflection.

Yeah, Jazzzoline, me too. Whad y'all come up with, anyhow? Or do we have to wait for Yom Kippur for the results to be in?

It's a marathon, not a sprint.
My uncle, my father's twin in fact, died Saturday night, so RH offered an even more meaningful chance to reflect. After all, it is on these holidays that we wish to be inscribed in the book of life for another year. Clearly, the name of Laurence Rubin was not intended to be writ again. (BTW, the Leonard Cohen song, Who By Fire, is based on a powerful prayer recited during these services). The nice thing is that I got to spend a lot of time with lots of family. I'm blessed in that I have a number of greats aunts and uncles who are in their 80s and 90s, all still pretty sharp, and I love them all, and it was a nice time for them to meet Stella Rose.
Scott, kisses given. (Itchy kisses, as we call daddy's busses in our home.)
Now, can someone tell me what crunky means? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjlnTh26lyk

It would be nice after all that reflection if sanity took hold.

Reflecting's OVER. Back to violently attempting to alter each other's viewpoints, rather than seeking any change within their own minds and hearts.

Not quite. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins at sundown on Sunday. It's the grand finale. All these days in between have been reflecting days.
