Whatever Happened To...?

Here's a thread for musicians who have had a promising start and/or have disappeared from the radar screen.

Here are some musicians I've been wondering about:

Rodney Kendrick--I didn't love his stuff, but I know he excited a lot of people at jcs/jc. He seemed to show promise, but I haven't heard anything about him in a while.

Odeon Pope--Here's a guy I have never got around to checking out, but I recall hearing some positive things about him.

Victor Lewis--Underrated writer and drummer. I loved him Horizon. I know he's had some albums on smaller labels, but I haven't heard his name mentioned in a while.

Rodney Kendrick will be at Yoshi's in April with Abbey Lincoln.

Victor is still waaay busy in NYC.

Courtney Pine doing more of the 'hip-hop' thing in London.

Odeon Pope has his own groups still and is pretty active. I saw him with Max Roach a couple of years ago.

Has Benny Carter finally been overtaken by time? The man has had an absolutely amazing career but I haven't heard anything about him for quite a while. I'm sure other posters have more knowledge of this.

As PeteC posted, Benny finally put his alto away with his trumpet according to an LA Times review by (I think) Don Heckman.
But truly the grand old man of jazz, there were mighty few equal, let alone better.

I would like to hear the news on James Carter.
I do like his energetic, charged-up playing and I believe it has been some time since his last pair of releases. Anyone?

Another damn fine, recent Odean Pope recording:

CIMP 239
Byard Lancaster (alto sax, bells, flute), Odean Pope (tenor & soprano sax), Ed Crockett (bass), J.R. Mitchell (drums)
Philadelphia Spirit in New York

Recorded January 23 & 24, 2001.

I know a lot of musicians still hang around and play in clubs and such, but some have sure dried up in terms of recording. Rodney Kendrick is a good case in point.

What's happening with Ornette Coleman these days?

Ornette still performs only sporadically, and I guess he hasn't released anything since Sound Museum & Colors. He was great at the SF Jazz festival in November, in a trio with Denardo & Charnett Moffett, and they'll be at Carnegie Hall in June for the JVC festival.

Kendrick released a fairly recent (2001?) disc on, if memory serves, Columbia--but it was a Europe-only release. I haven't bothered to track it down as I gather it had hiphop vocals on it, which didn't sound promising.

He's indeed a remarkable player--Dance World Dance & Last Chance for Common Sense are two of my favourite albums from the 1990s, both now unfortunately deleted, like most of the Verve Gitanes Jazz series.

Can someone explain why Barry Altschul mostly disappeared from the recording studios after the early 1980s? He's recently reappeared on a CIMP disc by Adam Lane, but why the long disappearance?

& why hasn't Reggie Workman recorded anything under his own name since those two nifty discs for Postcards in the mid-1990s?

Isn't Ricky Ford living in Europe?

Someone, I think Howard Mandel, told me that Altschul recently moved back to the U.S. after years in Europe, but that doesn't explain why he wasn't recording. He sounded great when I saw him with Adam Lane.

As far as Workman, who knows whether the lack of recent leader dates is his choice, or the absence of a label's interest. I haven't noticed him doing any recent gigs as a leader in NY, and I think he is pretty busy with the jazz program at the New School.

Barry Altschul recorded with John Tchicai in January '02 on Adam Lane's CIMP disc, "Fo(u)r Being(s)."

Workman is part of the collective trio BREW with Miya Masaoka and Gerry Hemingway, founded in 2000. The trio have recorded their first CD, "Heat", compiled from studio and live dates, for possible release late in 2003. I'd welcome any additional info.

Ford lives in Paris now, I believe. He has released a few records in recent years on the Jazz Friends label, and can be heard stirring the pot on a fine date released under Richard Davis' name on the Marge label, TOTAL PACKAGE.

Carl Grubbs

I don't think that Carl Grubbs has been heard from much lately. He has a new one out on CIMP that also features Odean Pope :

He'll also be playing later this month in Philly:

Carl Grubbs
— Chris' Jazz Cafe, 1421 Sansom St, Philadelphia
Apr 25 (Fri) — 9 pm — $8
