Felipe Alou has been sacked by the Giants.
On the short list of replacement managers are: Bud Black, Bob Brenly, Lou Piniella and Giants bench coach Ron Wotus.
Nix on Pinella...the guy is poison.
I'd like to see Brenly take over, personally. After his success as manager in AZ and the fact he is a former Giant catcher make him my choice.

Goodspeak, don't you think Alou got a raw deal? Do you have *any* confidence in the Ginats front office to pick up players that whoever they get to manage can win big with?
You really surprised me on this one; I expected you to be blasting the front office.

Tim shows disappointemnt, but I can't recall him ever blasting the Giants [or 'niners for that matter] that I can recall.
Reading between the local lines, I think that they get into the free agent marketplace this year. If not they are nuts. No way for them to maintain the 3,000,000 annual attendance with what they put on the field now.
Recent history with Bonds' sky high salary has been to overpay decent players while not pulling the trigger to get top flight talent. Now they can spend the money to bring in some 1st line players that aren't old and at/near the end of the line.

Hate,
Maybe he did...if he was 51 instead of 71.
Felipe himself was hinting at retirement as early as August, so I really don't think this was a surprise to him or unacceptable.
As to any confidence...Sabean isn't the problem with cutting the purse strings, so to speak. Peter Magowan, however, is. If he [Magowan] continues to run the Giants like he does his discount supermarkets, the Giants are doomed to second class status or worse.
I like Alou and thought he did well by the Giants fans. His sorry-assed bullpen, however, made a career of stinking up the league. That, my friend, is completely representative of Magowan's penny-pinching philosophy of Major League Baseball.

Fair enough 'Speak, but here's what a Ginat fan at another bbs I post on said (please comment): "Sabean deserves at least as much of the blame for the Giants woes as Alou does. I've got my barfbag ready for the Giants offseason moves this year. Coax Marquis Grissom out of retirement? Maybe sign Jamie Moyer to "anchor" the rotation?
That organization is a shambles. I won't be spending any money on those idiots as long as they keep lying to me that they don't have any money to get/keep good players."
I may post Schwartz's comments back there to get a reaction

Sabean does indeed deserve a lot of criticism. For the last several years (except for 05-06, obviously) he had the best hitter in the history of the sport, and he failed to put even a reasonably effective team around him. Sort of like if you went back in time and took all the great players away from the 27 Yankees except for Ruth, and left them with one good starting pitcher.

There won't be much on the market, either, and they'll have their hands full trying to keep Schmidt on board. Can you imagine where they'd be without him?

I don't doubt Sabean needs to shoulder at least some of the blame....but the bottom line is he can't sign players unless Magowan cuts loose with the cash.
Having said that, the Joe Nathan/Liriano trade to the Twinkies [for AJ Perzinski...ack!] and Russ Ortiz for Ponson trade certainly loom large as far as Sabean goes. But I have followed the Giants for a lot of years and when players are picked up for what amounts to chump change and one -two year contracts, that just smacks of discount baseball at its very worst.

Agreed.
But who could predict the injuries to Moises Alou and Mike Metheney this season?

True dat.
But the greatest need is in middle relief and a bonafide closer.

if the Red Sox were as smart as they think they are, they'd already be going hard after Girardi. the only reason they shouldn't be is that they know he won't go there, and they don't want to piss off Francona unnecessarily if they're going to keep him (if they can't find an option they like better). but if I was Theo, I'd be seriously wining and dining Girardi already.

OK Guys...a question:
If you could affect your team's GM regarding off season pick-ups....what do you see as the team's greatest need?
Giants: Pitching, pitching and more pitching.

Red Sox: A right fielder with a cannon. A full sized center fielder. Starting Pitching that can go more than 4 innings. A manager who will pull the starter (before the horse has left the barn).
Leave the infield the F*ck alone! (watching them make the routine plays consistantly has been one of this year's only pleasures...)
reasonable ticket prices.

I've been wondering for awhile if the Yankees won the World Series this year, if Girardi might be their manager next year.

I've always wondered if Bud Black would make a good manager.
btw, Bolt Boy, not being in the loop is it a foregone conclusion that Torre will hang it up if he wins it all this year?

Jon can answer that better than I can. I'd be shocked if he stayed, if they won the World Series this year, but I've been shocked many times.

Um.
I really don't want to try and find out, Hate.
Bob Brenly is the logical choice in SF, IMHO.

I recently had to come up with a list of all the players I could find who have made at least $100 million in salary during their careers. I figured the results were worth sharing here. This is through 2006.
Barry Bonds: $172.7 million
Alex Rodriguez: $147.7 million
Randy Johnson: $143.3 million
Greg Maddux: $133.8 million
Kevin Brown: $130.9 million
Ken Griffey, Jr.: $130.6 million
Gary Sheffield: $129.8 million
Jeff Bagwell: $128.1 million
Manny Ramirez: $126.3 million
Sammy Sosa: $123.6 million
Mike Mussina: $122.4 million
Roger Clemens: $121 million
Pedro Martinez: $120.4 million
Derek Jeter: $118 million
Tom Glavine: $113.1 million
Mike Piazza: $111.7 million
John Smoltz: $108.1 million
Carlos Delgado: $103.8 million
Bernie Williams: $103.1 million
Mo Vaughn: $100.4 million
