Anybody know of a similar BBS devoted to contemporary classical music?

I'm trying to round up a couple of like-minded players in my area to jam with occasionally....

Not entirely devoted to it, but there's a nice deal of discussion on that at IHM, Walto...I remember recent threads on James Tenney, the Cage fests and several political discussions over the Cardew texts.

It's not devoted to contemporary classical music but some threads are.

A forum that covers contemporary classical music as well as anything relating to classical music is Good Music Guide. http://www.good-music-guide.com/forum/ It's really active.

No, but I saw the Alexander String Quartet do a pretty damn good Shostakovich 2nd String Quartet the other night.

Stoltzman on clarinet is up next.

Walto, this board (BBC Radio 3's "New Music") has several interesting threads:

http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?board=9.0

I found it through the Feldman/Scelsi thread at IHM.

Thanks for the links. I've been listening to as much modern classical (absurd label, but what are you gonna do) as jazz or anything else, lately. I want to look into closer.

So, Walto -- who are your favorite "contemporary classical" composers?

I can't think of many I am very fond of.

Marc Mellits is one.

I guess Elliott Carter, but, being just about 100, I'm not sure he still counts as "contemporary."

I see a couple of my favorites -- James Carney and Steve Lehman -- got grants from the CMA.

Anyone else like the others listed here?

CMA Awards $145K in Grants to Composer-Led Jazz Ensembles
Published: September 5, 2007

Chamber Music America has awarded twelve new jazz commissions through its New Works: Creation and Presentation Program for composers and their ensembles. The program is part of CMA’s service to the jazz community and is made possible with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. An independent panel of jazz composers and performers selected this year’s recipients from a group of 164 applicants. The following composers and their ensembles will receive awards of up to $15,000: Peter Apfelbaum, Roland Barber, James Carney, Rebecca Cline, Jim Gailloreto, Geoffrey Keezer, Steve Lehman, Miles Okazaki, Bob Rodriguez, Adam Rudolph, Brad Shepik, and Doug Wamble. Details on the composers’ ensembles and brief descriptions of the proposed works are available here.
