I've been away for almost 5 years... what's up here?

I doubt if anybody remembers me from the old JCS website. "Clap for the Meatman..He's gonna rate your record high, etc etc". I posted sporadically on JCS, but encountered the wrath of DEEP, a guy named Tim (last name started with a "K") and occasionally Conan Nads. I did some free-lance music reviews for several on-line and mainstream periodicals but never knew about "Jazzcorner". I'm a musician...guitar mostly, took up sax ten years ago. It's a tough instrument, but so expressive. What's up? I appreciate anything you guys can share with me. I'll be lurking for a while then full speed ahead. Thank you.

Everything is up, man. Dan (DEEP) is gone--never to return, he was banned forever. Tim Kroesen (whoever the heck that was--what a weirdo) is never around either-at least to my knowledge. I think that Conan cat has been banned too.

So, it's the usual here--political discussions, reviews of music, apppreciation of artists etc. etc. JC is an even better place than 5 years ago. Kudos to Lois for making things better & better! So, please, don't lurk too long--jump on in! Welcome back!

Welcome (back) MM. I agree it's better here than it used to be, but don't leave your thick skin at home. Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one, so don't be shy giving yours.

Welcome back MM.

Occasionally things here get a bit rowdy - I live for them.

What a fucking liar.

You don't live for the rowdy moments. Unless you mean you live for those moments so that you can cry like a baby about how badly I've offended you, or how barbaric and idiotic I am.

Meats,
I remember you from JCS mostly because you and Conan(?) got in some "discussions" about jazz guitarists. If I remember correctly, I think you called Conan a closet smooth jazz devotee because of his choice of favorite guitarists. Conan may have been offended and reacted in his customary way... throwing verbal missiles from cyberspace. DEEP always used that approach whether he like you or not. Welcome back. BTW, with a moniker like "Meatman" you gotta have a tough skin.

Not as wild and wooly as the old days, but wild and wooly enough. All you have to do is read a little to see what's what. I wish I could say I remember you from the way long ago, but that's what drugs and age will do to a person. I'm actually starting to kinda miss Danny. He could be a real ass, but at least he knew his shit. And Conan...he was so out there it was hard to stay mad at him. Mr. "ten notes a second." Kroesen...that guy was from another planet, period. I hope he's getting appropriate therapy and medication.

Most of all I miss Darryl G. Thomas, who hasn't been heard from since June, and rarely enough before that, and also Bruce K. Woods, who makes rare appearances on Speak Out. Both were among the most active voices in the early days of JazzCentralStation and then JC.

Meats,
If you're still doing the music critic gig, maybe I'll give you a cassette of my stuff, and you can tell me to keep working at it or to phuckoff. Also, weren't you one of the first critics to diss Mr. Marsalis? Inquiring minds, Meats.

Greetings Meatman.
Several years ago somebody on this or the prior bulletin board was good enough to inform us that there were hats made of meat. Given your name, I thought perhaps you would be interested.

By the way - I'm a vegetarian. This in no way should be taken as an indication of my support of such silly behavior.

I well remember some interesting exchanges between the Meatman and certain other JCS posters. Those were the days, alright.

Welcome back, Meat. What's been up with you?

Maybe Darryl T's been listening to his records instead of talking about them. ;-)

My favorite memory of Bruce, apart from hanging out once long ago, was one day when he called me on the phone. While we were talking, Bronwyn bellowed, "Sisco! There's an emu in the yard!" Looked out the kitchen window and sure enough, there was an emu in the yard. I told Bruce I had to get off the phone, there's an emu in the yard. Bruce says, "Where in the fuck do you people live!?"

Was from an emu farm, had escaped, and had been on the loose for a couple of weeks, turned out. Also turns out they go feral very quickly once loose. The emu split shortly thereafter. Later that day, a woman on the other side of the hill we live on looked out her kitchen window and the emu was peering in. Scared the shit out of her. She called her husband. By then the emu was chasing his dogs around his house, so he took out the 12-gauge and let the emu have it. The people at the emu farm told him he'd done the right thing as they become dangerous once loose. Later that night -- I get to the point, here, Meatman -- they brought him a huge, bloody emu thigh for the oven.

I don't know if it tasted like chicken or not.

When we lived in the outback outside of Punta Gorda there was a place three doors down from us that raised emu's. Our dumbass landlord across the street would always talk about "them damn ostriches down the road".

They make a very strange sound. Very deep, lots-o-bass.

This thread is beginning to activate some long-dormant synapses. DEEP choose to do battle with me ("Hey, Lenny's pennies, when you get over your
"I'm a white guy pretending to be a black guy playing the blues" stage, I might let you return to JCS") but was absolutely merciless with Conan (Hey, you 120 pound son of bloviation, I'm giving you 24 hours to get outta here").

Also, I think Tim K tried to do some nasty stuff with peoples' e-mail accounts
at JCS. Or maybe he was the one who found a way to get peoples' e-mail addresses and fired off nasty stuff.

Meatman, were you the critic that several musicians at JCS submitted their recordings to for objective criticism? If so, I sent you a compilation of my original music (jazz, fusion, standards, some blues). If you are that guy, thanks for the kind words, If you're not that guy, thanks anyway. Waiting for you to de-lurk and start posting!

Clap for the Meatman, he gonna rate your record high, clap for the Meatman, he gonna do it til the day he die.

Here's the latest. The Meatman remembers DEEP, quite fondly in fact. Old Danny was as ornery as it can get but he had the knowledge of music that earned him my respect. Tim K was ornery too but had not a shred of decency, normality, and all the other attributes of civilization. Conan was a lost soul who used the internet as a way to command some attention, until it was clearly evident that his forte was jazz lite or more accurately, jazz latte. Lenny was, and probably still is, a very skilled musician, and yes, Lenny's pennies, I still have the tape you sent me. Still impressed with your command of a variety of musical styles. Hope this short re-introduction to the Meatman went well, and also hoping that the "120 pound son of bloviation" returns to the flock.

Meats,
First of all, thank you for the kind words. I'm, as always, a student of music and welcome any feedback you or others can provide about music, whether it be my own or the vast ocean that is this great art form. It's the passion of my life and one of the things which defines me as an individual.
I agree with you about Danny. He was a fountain of real information and he never really bothered me because I respected him as a musician. I'm not sure about Conan. Notwithstanding his "45 notes per second" garbage, there was something likeable about his schtick, even his absolute refusal to acknowledge the skills of Hendrix or even Coltrane. If I had my druthers, I wish both of them could find a way to ignore the demons which they let surface in JCS and here, and just return. As for Tim K, I have no comment.
Hope the Meatman will visit here often.

Damn I forgot about Bruce K Woods....that dude was classy. I think the first big discussion I ever got in was with Father Thorne, Woods, and Thomas.....damn that was a long time ago.

Bruce is the reason I'm online at all, actually. The very first day Bronwyn bought her first laptop, I went online for the first time and did a search on "jazz." JCS came up and I almost immediately got into an argument with Bruce over hip hop that went on for three days, nearly real time.

Mr. Cisco,
I did the same thing at JCS and incurred the wrath of Conan with an opinion I stated about one of his guitar heroes. BTW, were you pro or anti hip hop?

I was defending it as a valid music. Bruce and I became friends right away, incidentally. It was an argument for argument's sake. He's one of my favorites of all the online friends I've made through the years, though we only got to hang a couple of times in person, over one weekend.
