J.J. Johnson : Solo Trombone

Hi all,

I have a question. Does anyone know whether J.J. did any more solo (i.e without accompaniment) recordings other than 'Beautiful Love' from 'Let's Hang Out'?

Hearing J.J. play by himself is such a beautiful thing.

Cheers,
Jackson

Pretty much anything by JJ Johnson is worth listening to.

Well, there's this gem from 1963.

I was very fortunate to hear J.J. with the Miles Davis Sextet in January, 1962, a group that was, sadly, not recorded.*

*This particular incarnation of the sextet.

Thanks for the replies. I agree anything played by J.J. is worth listening to. I was looking for more solo trombone stuff, it was such powerful stuff.

If you haven't heard Beautiful Love from 'Let's Hang Out' I highly recommend it.

I'll also be sure to check out J.J.'s Broadway.

My apologies, Jackson. I was under the (false) impression that J.J.'s Broadway was a solo effort, a fact now corrected. It is a rare recording, however, and worth searching out, I'm sure.

You may have to settle for one of the duos with Kai Winding. Not a terrrible sacrifice, actually.

Check out We'll Be Together Again with Joe Pass. I think it is on Pablo. It's not JJ all by himself, but it is just JJ and Joe, and it's great.
