Republikan Pork

Many people tend to blame the war(s) for the historically unprecedented deficit spending by this congress. Not.

Check it:

scroll down to "Republicans And Pork."

I can remember when, for conservatives, deficit spending was evil incarnate. It will become so again when they lose control of congress. Most will forget that either change had ever happened.

I read the Daily Dish faithfully and while I disagree with Andrew Sullivan on a lot of issues he has been merciless and rightfully so about calling the Republicans out on government spending.

Some politician (don't remember who) once said that it was OK to be a liberal, it just wasn't OK to be called a liberal. The converse also appears to be true. When the likes of Antonin Scalia, Tom DeLay, and George W. Bush can call themselves "conservatives" in the face of so much evidence to the contrary, the word "conservative" has apparently lost all of its meaning.

I read Sullivan's column every day also and have many disagreements with him but he's been merciless and rightly so, being a conservative, flaying this congress and admin on conservative issues. Happily, it's a growing thing, this reassertion. My history aside, I could live with some of the old time conservatism. Balance the budget (and then whack the shit out of it), cut back the government to the minimum that gets appropriate jobs done, cast a cold eye on Big, Bright Ideas for what government ought to do, and otherwise mind your own business, in particular but not only about who you choose to sleep with or not. Good fences make good neighbors. A revolver under every seat. All that kind of thing.

Gah! Sounds utopic today.
