Your favorite One-Hit Wonders

If you subscribe to XM radio, they have a station that's only available via the internet - channel 300 - dedicated to One-Hit Wonders. Here are some of my favorites:

Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass
House Of the Rising Sun- Frigid Pink
Whip it - Devo
Those Were The Days (My Friend) - Mary Hopkin
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves
Midnight At The Oasis - Maria Muldaur
They're Coming To Take Me Away - Napoleon IV

Have a hard time putting Devo, which had a solid body of work, and Muldaur in the category of "one-hit wonders" like the others listed, although I understand why.

Anyway, soft spots for:

"Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" -- Edison Lighthouse
"Hocus Pocus" -- Focus
"Ride, Captain, Ride" -- Blues Image
"The Rapper" -- Jaggerz
"Are You Ready?" -- Pacific Gas & Electric
"One Tin Solider" -- Coven (Soul Asylum did a bang-up take on this live)
"Dancing in the Moonlight" -- King Harvest
"They Don't Know" -- Tracy Ullman

"Timothy" by the Buoys... the only pop song about cannibalism.

"Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image, whose lead guitarist was Mike Pinera, also of Iron(InnaGaddadafrekkingVida) Butterfly. Mike is still an excellent musician.

Back in the day, the guy who managed EMS also managed a folk duo that I used to play bass for. He also managed The Music Explosion ("Little Bit Of Soul"), another one-hit wonder.

As for myself, I loved the Minneapolis-based Castaways, who had a hit with "Liar, Liar."

If the Beatles had come from Parkchester Avenue in The Bronx, they would have sounded like The Knickerbockers.

The Swinging Medallions...what can you say? They made puking on your girlfriend's front lawn at 3 am cool...

These guys made it cool again entering the new millenium.

Can we forget about the things I said
When I was drunk
I didn't mean to call you that
I can't remember what was said or what you threw at me
Please tell me, please tell me Why
My car is in the front yard,
And I'm Sleeping with my clothes on
Came in through the window last night
And your gone
Gone
It's no suprise to me I am my own worst enemy
'Cause every now and then I kick the living shit out of me
The smoke alarm is going off,
And there's a cigarette Still burning,

That must be coz of over-familiarity, I guess. For me, Walking On Sunshine is a damn near perfect pop rock 'n' roll toon.

More faves:

William Truckaway - Bluegreens
Jeff Beck - Hi Ho Silver Lining
Gail Garnett - Walk In The Sunshine
Verdell Smith - Tar And Cement
Sandy Posey - Single Girl
Crispian St Peters - Your Were on My Mind and Pied Piper (with Jimmy Page on guitar)

Best ever B side: The Small Faces - I'm Only Dreaming (flip of Itchyass Park)

I don't think that Jeff Beck and Small Faces were "one hit wonders" (but I could be dreaming ...)
