Interview w. the woman who shot Lee Morgan

Is there anyone interested in a 28-minute audio profile and interview of Helen Morgan, Lee's ex-wife and his murderer, who died in 1996, in Wilmington, North Carolina? It is part of a program I produce called the Carolina Connection in jazz. It should be of interest to radio stations, private citizens and educators. For more information carolinajazzconnection.blogspot.com

may i ask why you're persisting in using this thread title after you've received negative feedback about it? doesn't cast a very favorable light on your intentions.

The URL (address) is wrong--that is, even if it were linked, it wouldn't work. Different links to your blog that I've found on other jazz boards and in a Google search don't work either.

Please supply the correct URL.

(And you can make it a link by clicking on
above the Post Reply form.)

I found this link:

I'm curious why reading an interview with Morgan's killer would be so objectionable?

stone, I'll let Valerie and others speak for themselves, but I think her objection was likely focused on the sensational, tasteless thread title.

As for the blog, one thing I discovered is that its author certainly isn't shy about characterizing himself in a most favorable manner.

Dubbed "Dr. Jazz," by musician Bro. Yusuf Salim, Thomas, who is the host and producer of The Carolina Jazz Connection, considers himself foremost "a gentleman and a scholar and a servant of the people." - Larry Reni Thomas

One more thing.

Mr. Thomas has boasted that he has " . . . RARE RECORDED INTERVIEWS OF JAZZ PERSONALITIES, INCLUDING THE EXCLUSIVE, ONE AND ONLY, REVEALING ONE OF HELEN MORGAN, THE WIFE AND KILLER OF JAZZ LEGEND TRUMPET PLAYER LEE MORGAN."

Where is it?

Every article I find on Google tells me that Helen's last name was More, not Morgan, and that she was Lee's common-law wife (or "mistress," in some accounts), not his legal wife.

Also, I'm not finding anything about her being an "ex" at the time of his death.

All of this self-puffery and adolescent posturing makes me want to read/hear the interview even more. Could be quite amusing.

Agree. Not sure what's so objectionable about the thread title, except for the poor phrasing. It should simply read "Interview with Lee Morgan's Killer," avoiding the double possessive. Florid, yes, but hardly offensive....

Dennis, that was my point in post #7.

This is not only an "exclusive interview", it's an elusive, mysterious one, too. Maybe he meant to say "elusive interview"?

Not very definitive-

Morgan led what turned out to be the last session of his life in September 1971. On February 19, 1972, Morgan was performing at the New York club Slug's when he was shot and killed by his common-law wife, Helen More. Accounts of exactly what happened vary; whether they argued over drugs or Morgan's fidelity, whether she shot him outside the club or up on the bandstand in front of the audience, jazz lost a major talent. Despite his extensive recorded legacy, Morgan was only 33 years old. Many of his unreleased Blue Note sessions began to appear in the early '80s, and his critical standing has hardly diminished a whit. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Interview of Helen Morgan (aka Helen More): the lady who shot Lee Morgan

In its January 2007 edition, Downbeat magazine's David French wrote about Lee Morgan's last days. He hardly mentioned Helen Morgan (aka Helen More) and her story. The article also said that a biography on Lee Morgan (His Life, Music and Culture by Tom Perchard, Equnox) has been published. In addition, French wrote that a documentary film by DBE is scheduled for release in 2007, as well as more RVG edition reissues from Blue Note Records. Hear North Carolina Helen Morgan (aka More) tell her side of the story in her own words in a February 1966 interview, a month before her death. It is part of a series called The Carolina Connection. Go to carolinajazzconnectionwithlarrythomas.blogspot.com.
