Tierney Sutton Wins L.A. Jazz Society Jazz Vocalist Award
Telarc recording artist and GRAMMY® nominee Tierney Sutton won the Jazz Vocalist Award at the 23rd annual L.A. Jazz Society Awards, held at the Los Angeles Marriott Downtown Hotel on Sunday, October 22, 2006. John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, and Billy Childs also took honors, along with Verve chairman Tommy LiPuma, DJ Helen Borgers and jazz community activist Sybil Coker. Quincy Jones and Dianna Krall were honorary chairs.
Sutton says, “I was profoundly moved, especially to be presented with the award by my heroes Alan and Marilyn Bergman.”
“It was a wonderful event, and Tierney richly deserves this award,” says Sutton’s producer Elaine Martone, Executive Vice President of Production at Telarc. “The Los Angeles jazz community honored her artistry, and I feel fortunate to have played a part in her career. She is an extraordinary person, and her star continues to rise. L.A. knows that they have the real deal in Tierney and her band of 14 years. I think her forthcoming album, On the Other Side, is a landmark recording.”
Sutton was a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition in 1998. Her 2004 Telarc release, Dancing in the Dark, debuted in the Billboard Jazz top ten and remained on the charts for over 15 weeks. In 2005, Sutton released her first live recording, I’m with the Band [click here for Jazz Police review], which garnered a GRAMMY® Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She also teaches at the University of Southern California and conducts master classes and workshops worldwide.
Sutton and her longtime band – pianist Christian Jacob, bassists Trey Henry and Kevin Axt, and drummer Ray Brinker – recorded On the Other Side in late August 2006 at the legendary Capitol studios in Los Angeles. Their sixth Telarc release also features the outstanding work of trumpeter/vocalist Jack Sheldon on two tracks.
