New Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hopefuls

CLEVELAND, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Nine acts, including R.E.M., Van Halen and Patti Smith, have been nominated to be enshrined in the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Also vying for a spot in the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are The Stooges, the Dave Clark Five, Chic, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Joe Tex and the Ronettes, Billboard.com reported Monday.

Five of the nominees -- to be chosen in January -- will be put into the Hall of Fame.

The 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction will be March 12 at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

My votes go to the Stooges, Joe Tex, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash, and the Ronettes.

I'd go with those, too. But where the hell is Mary Wells??!

So many are late in getting their due; many will be unjustly passed over forever.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Monkees to be enshrined.

R.E.M. belongs, if only for briging College Rock forever into the mainstream.

Not at all. What's your criteria? Sales? Hits? Cultural impact? Influence? Monkees score across the board. Didn't play their own instruments? Neither did the Temptations.

Hell, Michael Nesmith himself deserves to be in on his own individual merits.

I can't take this shit seriously but if I did, I'd have to say that The Stooges belong in the HOF before anyone else being considered in this selection.

And no one in polite company should ever again speak of The Dave Clark Five.

The Dave Clark 5 had some good strong records. Also, they were perhaps the first Caucasion rock band that both played their own instruments and used a horn section on their records. (eg, Glad All Over)

Neither did the Spice Girls or the Bay City Rollers.

Show me the video where the Monkeys sing and dance like the Temps.

This is better. Introducing the penultimate episode, Mike and Frank Zappa trade places. The following week, instead of doing the final song themselves, they brought out Tim Buckley to do "Song of the Siren."

And they introduced Jimi Hendrix to American 11-year-olds.

I maintain that there's nothing more rock & roll than a hall of fame!

Time for me to grump out:

Freakin' Blondie is in the Hall of Fame and Jackie Wilson isn't? What's up with that?

Eric Clapton is in there twice--once for Cream and once for himself--but Link Wray isn't? Lonnie Mack isn't? What the hell?

Another glaring omission - The Ventures.

Maybe the producer who invented the Monkees should be inducted.

You said it, Dave. I'll be playing Lonnie Mack on my radio show tonight as part of a Magnatone amp segment, along with Robert Ward and Steve Ferguson.

I still can't believe that James Taylor, the yuppie Perry Como, has been voted in. Wasn't rock and roll supposed to save us from that lame shit?

Stooges and Patti Smith!
Both are big favorites of mine!

If I have to choose one I choose Patti.

Kirschner wasn't the originator of the idea, he just bought it. Burt Sugarman and some other producer had the idea in the works for a couple of years before the series was made.

The Monkees gave huge exposure to a number of then-young, now-classic songwriters like Harry Nilsson, John Stewart, Neil Diamond, and others. And it's one thing to have the idea, it's quite another to make the records and perform the material in such a way that it's hugely popular.

You have to push past the stereotype. I defy anyone to listen to Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius & Jones Ltd., and tell me that's not a top-notch record.

There used to be another Monkees fan on this board. Where'd he go? I need an amen!

The Monkees should be in simply for the fact that they recorded one of the greatest R&R tunes of all time:

When I first met you girl you didn't have no shoes
Now you're walking 'round like you're front page news.
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But you won't find my name in your book of Who's Who.

I'm
not your steppin stone
I
I
I
I
I'm not your steppin stone

That tune is better than "Satisfaction" everyday of the week.

I think Paul Revere & the Raiders did it before the Monkees. They're not in the HOF either, despite a slew of great records (sorry, Brian).

I loved PR and The Raiders in those days.

The Monkees couldn't carry the Raiders' gear.

If we're going to talk rock and roll, which ought to be the case, though the HOF is absurd, The Monkees should be forever banned as poseurs.

Only a poseur would use a word like poseur!
