Free Jazz Clinics in LIU's Bklyn campus

Arturo O’Farrill, pianist and director of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and jazz guitarist Ron Affif will impart their wisdom to students and the public at free jazz clinics this fall at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus.

O’Farrill will lead a clinic November 7 from 4-6 p.m., in the campus’s Humanities Building, Room 106. Winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award for 2003, O’Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in NYC. His debut album with the Orchestra, “Una Noche Inolvidable,” earned a Grammy award nomination in 2006.

Ron Affif will lend his expertise to a clinic November 28 from 4-6 p.m., in the Humanities Building, Room 106. The nephew of guitarist Ron Anthony (who played with George Shearing and Frank Sinatra), Affif received his first guitar lesson from his uncle when he was 12.

LIU is at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn.

I can appreciate that it's free, and has outstanding artists running the clinics, but whoever came up with the schedule for this shouldn't be surprised if they have low attendance. Holding these seminars from 4-6 PM excludes most working people, and the very first one is on Election Day.

If they scheduled the workshops from 6 - 8 PM, even charging a nominal admission, they'd probably have a better turnout than the present free plan will.
