A Request For The Recording Companies

OK.

I just spent 20 minutes trying to scrap off one of those insipid stick-on's you record companies are famous for putting on the top of a CD jewel case. I only succeeded in scratching up the plastic and never got whatever stupid message [I would never read even at gun point] you people were trying to send me.

The residual glue sticks to everything. Other CD cases, my fingers and anything else you care to name....and I am sick to death of dealing with your insatiable need to advertise, sell or otherwise manipulate the buyer.

Can't you people stick that useless crap on the srink wrap?

My advice?

Stop it.

Stop it now.

Have a nice day.

Goody, if you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I could show you how to eliminate your aggravation in 5 seconds or less in-person.

If you're talking about the clear label with artists name/album title and the like adhering to the top of the jewel case which hangs approximately ½" over the front and back of the case, I'll attempt a long-distance explanation.

While holding the jewel case in your hands and looking at the front cover, take your thumbnail and insert it in the upper or lower left part of the jewel case cover and gently pry the front portion of the case away from the rest of the case. You now should be holding the entire front piece of clear plastic from your CD jewel case with the nasty clear sticker attached. Once that front portion of the plastic jewel case is unhinged (top and bottom) from it's resting place, with its little pins out of the holes, you can then easily and quickly pull one half of the label off, then the other half off.

Reinsert the pins on the case face back in the two holes top and bottom, and you're done.

Hope this helps.

Ron,

No.

I'm talking about the paper stick-on they put on the face of the jewel case. You know, the one that tells you this is a re-master of the original or the million awards this record won or how wonderful the music is inside or how bitchen they are for re-issuing it.

They never use the same adhesive found on the security tape at the top of the jewel case or what is found on Scotch Tape. That I can get off.

In that case you have two other options.

1. Put it in a new jewel case.

2. Live with it.

Of course, Goody does have a point. And it's not just CDs. Plenty of products come with stickers in place that you'd expect, if the manufacturer had a brain, or cared, would peel easily off, but don't. I find this especially happens with pots and pans or glassware. Or maybe I just notice it more, since I'm going to be cooking with this stuff, so first let me bathe it in goo gone which is frigging lighter fluid. That always stimulates the appetite.

I know, I know, insert thumbnail. I deserve that.

I just run a knife under the top part of the tape, down its length. The two pieces can then be simply lifted off like any piece of tape.

Amazing the effort -- and multiple expense -- they put into bar codes, though. There's already one on the cover itself, unless really independent. (Very, very few.)

I use a hairdryer which heats up the glue enough to remove the sticker without any of the problems outlined above. You only need to lightly heat the sticker for a few seconds to alter the temperature of the sticker-glue enough to remove it hassle free. No, it doesn't damage CD or cover.

I don't doubt what you say, but if you're correct, how do you feel about your instrument, the trombone, Brett?

Don't most of the record companies put the stickers on the shrink wrap? I can't remember ever having to peel a sticker off a case.

That is my experience too. Perhaps it is an American thing. Or a pun.

I have, and have been seeing it more recently. Since I transfer my CDs out of jewels cases into plastic slip sleeves, I don't much care. From the batch I transferred yesterday, I see that the soundtrack to South Pacific had TWO stickers, one announcing new digital remastering + bonus tracks and the other announcing a 1999 Drama Desk award.

The nicer more circumspect ones do, yes.

I have been buying a lot of re-issues lately and it is on these CDs I see the problem crop up most frequently.

Sony is the worst for this in the U.S. Almost all of the Legacy imprints have inside-the-shrink stickers on the jewel cases.
