Is it more than a coincidence that the headlines in the Boston Globe the last two days have been something like "Saddam Sentenced to Death" and "Heating Oil Prices to Plummet This Winter"? Nice timing there.

Not enough.
Repugnant getting out their "base" vote (to the extent they still have one) wouldn't be enough even if they all came out and even if they all voted repug. Ain't but a third of the vote. They needed a large percentage of independents (not getting them).
It's all over but Ringo singing "Good Night."

For Junior it is, definitely.
The price of oil will rise again, next time there's a dramatic event, virtually anywhere. If not, the supplying countries will cut back on production to keep those petrobucks flowing in.

So the OPEC nations kept things flowing so the Republicans would retain the Congress? What kind of sense does that make?

Stick to what's on the page.
They'll cut back to keep their bucks coming in. Has nothing to do with repubs or dims or anything American, far's that goes. They've been bathing in money and profit. That's the only reason they need.
And the speculators who haunt the markets will freak out over any dramatic event.
The US is a spectator in the oil game.

I'm not certain, but I doubt short-term U.S. heating oil prices are entirely unmanipulable--except by OPEC. There are refineries here that probably will take phone calls from certain Washington, DC numbers.

That's a big "except." And OPEC today has zero reason to give the US a break.

Oh, gotcha.
Your statement was just in general. Oil prices will rise again.
Well, since you're putting your neck on the line please allow me to join you.
The price of milk will also rise.

Yeah but milk doesn't heat houses, Scott. You don't have to worry about burst plumbing and having to replace sheetrock and flooring and etc if you don't buy milk.
There is also more milk produced every day than can be consumed.
Ain't that way with oil. One big terrorist blast anywhere in the US or Euro realm of interest will have the speculators pissing themselves a second later.

I don't think I put my post very clearly. I meant others, besides OPEC, can manipulate these prices, short term. It's obviously a bit paranoid to think this, but the powers that be can, I think, get lower heating oil rates as a favor for a little while--without any help from OPEC.

They're awash in profits, too.
The biggest short term effect this winter will be a well-placed bomb.

Gary, I know for a fact you don't believe that. Whats produced and whats put on the market are two completely different things. The NOCs are the biggest problem.

And there *is* a huge surplus of milk in the US. Has been for decades. It's one of the primary factors in the decline of the family farm. Farmers receive so little for milk, even with subsidies, that only large operations that can take advantage of scale have any hope of profit. For a family sized dairy today, the best that can be hoped for is to not owe the bank anymore money at the end of the year.

Water will be the next weapon. After oil, it will become the deciding factor as to who will have the power and who won't. Oil's the prize, but without potable water we'll all go down.

It's a total coincidence that those two headlines came in close proximity to each other.
Josh Marshall makes a plausible case that the Saddam verdict announcement was rushed due to the election tomorrow but I doubt the New York Times owned Boston Globe is conspiring with Bush to give inordinate attention to the recent plunge in heating oil futures prices.

I'm glad to call Alaska my home, where we have plentiful supplies of oil, natural gas, fresh milk, clean air, pristine water, seafood and world-class scenery.
Hell, we may be selling glacier ice and water to Californians and others before long. At least if we had a tanker spill, it wouldn't pollute like the Exxon Valdez, piloted by Capt. Bozo Hazlewood.

Crude oil, natural gas, heating oil, gas oil, you name it, all oil futures plunged in September-October. I'm sure you heard of Amaranth, the hedge fund that went broke betting the other way on natural gas.
I'd like to hear your explanation about how this could have all been manipulation by pro-Bush forces.

Ron, do I have to come up there and explain global warming to you? Although, in the short term, I could use a chuck of glacier right now. It would be worth a fortune here in the Mojave. Maybe we can work something out on the side.

Hey, I said it was probably a paranoid delusion, Gordon! But are you saying that short term oil prices aren't manipulable at all?

Aw, he's just been unlucky: Iraq, Katrina, Delay, Ney, Abramoff, Foley...what's a poor Texas boy to do? He's holding a press conference today at 1 pm. If he had any sense, he'd set out Rumsfeld's head as a peace offering. But we've already stipulated he doesn't have any sense. My guess is that he'll make a show of defiance and then retreat to Crawford. If he can't be King anymore, it won't be any fun for him.
On second thought, he'll make a pro-forma offer of bipartisanship, and then Tony Snow will get up and explain that what the President means is if the House doesn't do what he wants, it just proves the Democrats are not serious.
