Jamie Masefield's professional independence is matched by his artistic integrity, so the recent premiere of his conception of Tolstoy's “How Much Land Does a Man Need” is another innovative change of direction for the leader of The Jazz Mandolin Project. Jamie Masefield formed The Jazz Mandolin Project in 1993 more as an exploratory musical concept than a band which, over time, has been comprised of varying lineups of musicians.
JMP has since toured regularly appearing in clubs, theaters and festivals throughout the United States and the European continent. In addition to this consistent activity, the mandolinist often performs as a duo with Smokin' Grass leader Doug Perkins, has arranged limited engagements of programs of Django Reinhardt's music and regularly guests on stage with musicians visiting Vermont. ”Like Mandolinists Mike Marshall and David Grisman before him, Jamie Masefield is challenging notions of what that stringed instrument forever associated with folk and bluegrass music can do.” - JazzTimes, Bill Milkowski, May 2000
A world class guitar player, Frank Vignola was born and raised in Long Island, New York. Inspired by family, many of whom were musicians, he was playing guitar by the age of six. Working professionally by 12, he began doubling on the banjo, for which he was crowned the Grand National Banjo Champion of Canada at 13 years old. From early on his influences were diverse, ranging from Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass and Les Paul to Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Bach, all sources from which he still draws to this day. Over a 20- year career, he's recorded as a leader for a variety of labels including Concord, Nagel-Heyer and David Grisman's Acoustic Disc, while enjoying steady work as a sideman with the likes of Les Paul, Hank Jones and Mark O'Connor.
Gary Mazzaroppi After graduating from Berklee School of Music (Boston MA), Gary joined the Lionel Hampton Big Band. Since the, Gary has accompanied many jazz artists including: Red Norvo, Herb Ellis, Stan Getz, Joe Morello, Buddy Ricnh, Jim Hall, Warren Vache Jr., Barney Kessel, Clark Terry, Charlie Byrd, and Teddy Wilson. Gary has also played regularly with Marian McPartland, Tal Farlow, and Les Paul. Gary performed with both Les and Tal during the New Jersey Jazz Society's PBS Special “JERSEY JAZZ GUITARS,” and the Cinemax Special “LES PAUL, HE CHANGED THE MUSIC.” His work with Les Paul was heard on the weekly WFUN, New York, Radio feature “LES PAUL, LIVE FROM FAT TUESDAY'S”.
Gary's playing style is notable for his melodious harmonies, and strong solo's which are both imaginative and intricate. In a review of the Les Paul Trio, John S. Wilson of the New York Times stated: ”Mr. Mazzaroppi has developed into a brilliantly virtuosic bass soloist.”
