Legendary jazz vocalist Peter Eldridge, a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music, will conduct a master class on Wednesday for students in Ottawa and Montreal. This is the second of four classes in a series organized by Canada’s National Arts Centre, using ultrabroadband videoconferencing to link jazz faculty members of the Manhattan School of Music with advanced music students at the National Arts Centre.
A master class is a one-on-one lesson where a master musician teaches a selected student or ensemble under the watchful eyes of fellow students and members of the public. The audience, as well as the talented student in the spotlight, can learn from the master. Each master class involves two to three students, followed by a question period.
The National Arts Centre uses next-generation networks like Canada's CA*net4 and Internet2 in the United States. The Centre’s broadband infrastructure includes state-of-the-art optical network access in all its performance spaces as well as on-site videoconference and audio-video production facilities. Projects include telementoring sessions with master teachers in music, theatre and dance, as well as a "Music Bridge III" program in conjunction with the NAC Orchestra's tour.
