NPR criticised for featuring news over music

US public radio criticised for featuring news over music
American National Public Radio (NPR) has been accused of abandoning its programming of classical and jazz music in favour of news and current affairs.

A report from the Federal government’s major arts funding body - the National Endowment for the Arts - says: “There appears to be a tendency for public stations to discourage music programming in favor of news/talk broadcasts as a way to draw larger audiences.”

The Washington Post reports that NPR has copped to the charge of increasing its news and current affairs programming, but says it will maintain a strong commitment to jazz and classical music through extensive online programming.
