NJPAC commissioned the composition of Rising Tide, made possible by a grant from the Prudential Foundation. It is the third large-scale work by Irvin Mayfield, the young jazz trumpet virtuoso who is also founder/artistic director of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. In this first-time double bill at NJPAC with New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band will feature New Jersey’s own Paquito D’Rivera, along with superstar trumpeter Roy Hargrove and pianist Cyrus Chestnut. In addition to the Rising Tide premiere, the NJPAC program will also include a century’s worth of great New Orleans jazz, including favorites by Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
Rising Tide is a cultural and emotional statement on the nature of life along the lower Mississippi River. Though it is not a memorial to the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, it features a haunting passage dedicated to Mayfield’s father, Irvin Mayfield Sr., who drowned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It celebrates New Orleans’ music traditions through the sounds of brass bands and Mardi Gras and church traditions, with influences ranging from neighborhood music to Ray Charles, Terence Blanchard and Lauryn Hill “It’s an honor to come play at what feels like a second home for us at the New Jersey Performance Arts Center,” Mayfield said. “It’s here where folks so graciously reached out to our musicians following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. We thought this was the appropriate time and place to unveil our newest work and show that jazz in New Orleans is still alive and growing.”
New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), located in the heart of an emerging downtown Newark, New Jersey, is the sixth largest performing arts center in the United States. Home of the Grammy® Award-winning New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, NJPAC has been widely cited as a catalyst in the revitalization of New Jersey's largest city, attracting over 4.5 million visitors (including more than 850,000 children) in its first nine years of operation.
This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.
NJPAC is a wheelchair accessible facility and provides assistive services such as TTY ticket purchase, designated seating, Sennheiser infrared listening devices and seat cushions.
