The Pipes and Drums

Is there nothing more important to an Irishman or a Scots-Irishman than the Bagpipes and Scottish Drums?

I swell with pride each and every time I hear this music.

It simply does not matter if it is our celebrated Irish-American commemorative "holiday" in Saint Patrick's Day or a time when we honor the NYC Police/Fire Dept. and their ultimate sacrifice during 9-11.

That march down Broadway during every St. Patrick's Day in NYC as the NY Police Dept. Pipes and Drums sing out, brings tears to my eyes each and every year.

Erin Go Braugh.

God Bless the Irish.

Me and mrs jmj were married on the front lawn of our apartment building (a converted antique carriage house), so we hired a Scottish piper to play for us. I've always been fond of the pipes.

Who was that guy who played bebop on the bagpipe?

It almost made that thing sound good.

Well, there's drink.

"If it's not Scottish, it's crap!"

But seriously, I've loved the bagpipes every one of the hundreds of times I've listened to them for five or ten minutes.

I knew a guy, a jazz fan, who played pipes in a large bagpipe ensemble. He said there was nothing quite like the sound of 30 bagpipers warming up in a high school gymnasium before an event. Said it sounded like Albert Ayler Heaven.

I've always though that Irish and Scottish bagpipes were different instruments.

Anyone know why it's traditional for a piper to play at the funeral of a police officer?

Creepy images from The Onion Field just appeared.

Vivid recollection of strolling around the grounds of the Keltic Lodge up in Cape Breton after breakfast, and hearing the sound of bagpipes approaching. The resort had at least two dozen teenage girl bagpipers march around playing bagpipes. Surreal.

I dig pipes and drums to an extent, but if I never hear Amazing Grace played on pipes again . . .

As a drummer myself, who is roughly ¼ Scotch and ¼ Irish, give me Rufus Harley with a hip drummer any day.

THE SCOTSMAN'S KILT

A Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked he'd drunk more than his share
He staggered on until he could no longer keep his feet
Then stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

Later on two young and lovely girls just happened by,
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
You see yon sleeping Scotsman who is young and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath their kilt.

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath their kilt.

They crept up to the sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Then lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt
Ws nothing but what God had graced him with upon his birth

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
There was nothing there but what God gave upon his birth

They marveled for a moment then one said we'd best be gone
But let's leave a present for our friend before we move along
They took a blue silk ribbon and they tied it in a bow
Around the bonnie spar that the Scot's lifted kilt did show

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
Around the bonnie spar that the Scot's lifted kilt did show

The Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled toward a tree
Behind a bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees
Then in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes
He said, "Lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won
first prize"

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
He said, "Lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won
first prize"

There's a piper who lives up the road from us who practices in his yard during the summer, I kind of like the sound from a distance. We also live fairly close to the Lieutenant Governor's mansion and the NB Highland games are held there every summer. So for a week or so we can hear some of the best pipe and drum bands around, here are last year's winning pipers and drummers:

My wife still has her swords for doing this style of dancing:

Claude - great photos.

I really enjoyed the time I spent up your way, and beyond. My kind of country.

Quiet and sleepy (in a good way).
