All beautiful recordings, imo, but where are the men???? Freddie Cole had a beautiful cd out this year, and Tom Lellis, and what did they do with Tony's duet album?

One of my guitar heroes, Tommy Emmanuel, received his first Grammy nomination. Go you Aussie wonder! For samples of his prowess, check out these babies....

www.guitarplayertv.com Click on "Tommy Emmanuel", especially "Tommy
Kicks Back", "Mombassa", and "Tommy's Medley"(my personal favorite).

Normally I hate the Grammys, particularly how they completely ignore jazz on their endless telecast. But I have to admit that this year's nominees largely make sense. While I don't think Nancy Wilson's CD deserved to be nominated and I fear that Diana Krall will win in that category because of her name recognition, in general the nominations are excellent. I'm particularly happy to see Ornette Coleman and Roberta Gambarini being nominated.

I'm going to be rooting for Nancy King. She is long, long, long deserving of greater recognition. The CDs by Ornette, Trio Beyond and Edsel Gomez are all well deserving of awards and I would like to say Sex Mob since I like a lot of the musicians involved but I haven't actually heard it yet.

I was happy with the Jazz Vocal nominations, especially the one for Nancy King. I've looked for a copy of that MaxJazz CD for which she was nominated and have yet to see a copy in a store. I hope MaxJazz will actually believe in it enough now to distribute it at least to Borders stores in the midwest. When I heard she was making a recording for MaxJazz, I was looking forward to actually seeing a CD of hers in a store.

I was surprised and pleased that Gladys Knight's "Before Me" was not nominated.

Awesome! Congatulations to Lithgow and your son. We have his 1st (?) album, Singin' in the Bathtub, and we absolutely love it: kid's music that's intelligent enough adults can enjoy it.

As to the other Grammys, I'm particularly encouraged about Sex Mob, Ornette, Trio Beyond, Edsel Gomez, and the ArtistShare releases.

I was going to go with Krall but I thought everyone knows the name Nancy Wilson and it's been a while since she's had a cd, but then again it's MCG vs. Verve... Marketing???

Mike, I didn't say which ones I like the best. The Grammys are basically a popularity contest and so given that all members of Naras vote (not just the jazz members) I'm just predicting how I think they may vote

I may have misunderstood, but my picks represent who I'd like to see get the prize based on my listening experiences from the varios recordings.

Michael Brecker won two more Grammy's today, albeit posthumously.

A fitting recognition - and well deserved. RIP Michael.

I hate the Grammies.

They ignore jazz on the telecast as if the music doesn't exist. Sometimes the nominations are worthwhile but then the best known artist wins virtually every time.

Best jazz vocal album of the year? Nancy Wilson. Huh?

The Grammies should be boycotted by the jazz world, not mentioned in the jazz magazines and picketed.

I cringe whenever I hear the phrase "Grammy-nominated artist." It means that the so-called mainstream music world has given us a crumb and expects us to feel grateful. In return we are supposed to mention the Grammies all year round like it means something.

In all of my books thus far, I have made sure that the Grammies are not mentioned even once.

Scott--

Yeah, but what do the Grammy nominees and winners think? A nomination or a win at least potentially means money in their pockets. (I hate to state the obvious, but . . . )

Surely some of them--in some genres, in some categories, in some years--are deserving.
