I'm reading at City Lights on 2/15. I'll post details closer to that time.

I think if you have drinks at Vesuvio's before & after (not the drivers) it qualifies as a literary trip and makes 125 miles more bearable. Plus, Cherches will make sure you eat well.

Pete, have you ever checked out the US Restaurant in North Beach? Old school Italian-American place. Great sourdough bread & calamari, big portions, great blue-plate vibe, as I recall. A place, you could easily take Cantiello & know he'll be satisfied.

Well, I just read that the ownership changed. It used to be owned by Cippolina's. I went in '92, I think. Really loved it. More like an East Coast, institution type place.

My awful experience was in the 80s. I can't imagine it has gotten better. Most North Beach Italian is as bad as NYC Little Italy.

Easy, big guy. Not everybody has easy access to Lupa and Via Emilia.

Yes, in its current incarnation. When it was on the corner of Broadway and Stockton many years ago it was a different animal. That corner has never been the same--one failed joint after another.

The best low-key Italian joint in the neighborhood remains Sodini's, on Green just below Grant. Gino's, a few doors down, is the best bar in the immediate vicinity. Of course, a short walk brings you to the great triptych: Specs, Vesuvio's, and Tosca.

Sonerexia, wow. I'm very interested to hear what inferior Italian eateries have to say about these guys.

Pete doesn't know it yet, but he will be eating at the nearby House of Nanking.

US Restaurant is decent, filling and cheap......but I wouldn't call it groundbreaking or unusual. Definitely like a lot of those Little Italy places in NYC.

As for those bars, Vesuvio, Specs & Tosca, they're literally in the same block as City Lights. Jazz at Pearl's is right there, too.

I doubt it. It has gone way downhill since it was a single storefront.

Don't know it. I think the only place I've eaten pizza in SF is at Pazzia.

Don't know Pazzia, myself.

BTW, Pauline's doesn't have wild boar as a topping.

One more worth thinking about: Delfina. They have both a regular restaurant and a pizza restaurant next door.

Link for Pauline's

I think "wild boar" (sp?) was the connecting concept.

Have fun tonight, Pete.

I'd love to hear you take things "outside" a bit on your new kazoo.
