Suggestions welcome (cool/mainstream jazz)

I wouldn't ever call myself a jazz novice. Going back at least ten years I have owned cornerstones of jazz music "Kind Of Blue", "A Love Supreme", "Headhunters"...et al.

But, I have a deep dark secret.

The records that I have truly loved throughout the years are records like "Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster", "Time Out" and "Getz/Gilberto". Those are the records that I continually return to and love, completely. I also have a thing for Gil Evans work with Miles.

Here's my question, I would like to flesh out my collection of 'mainstream'/'cool' jazz and I would like some suggestions. Any records you think that I would be likely to enjoy, given my stated favorites. Artists that directly influenced those artists, similar artists or records.

As the title says, suggestions welcome.

Laurindo Almeida/Bud Shank--Brazilliance, Vol. 1

Art Pepper--Straight Life (Hardly the only choice, though. Check out the recommendations in this thread:
Art Pepper for beginners.)

No, what I said was that it was a secret of mine. I was being a little flippant about the fact that I love those records and not other 'cornerstones' of jazz.

I'm glad that you posted a clarification for the benefit of GoodSpeak, buckeyeblogger.

Am I correct in assuming that you live in Ohio? If so, are you familiar with Delaware, where my wife lived before coming to Alaska?

I was probably being a little redundant there...

I am familiar with Deleware, Ohio but I have never been there. Actually I didn't move to Ohio until my 20's. I'm originally from Memphis, Tennessee (born and raised there).

Jimmy Guiffre with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer would be one that I would classify as "cool."

They would probably disagree with me.

OK, no expert on "cool", but under my crazy theory that jazz is not dead, how about a few newer musicians/composers :-)

Maria Schneider (a Gil Evans protege I believe)

maybe some of Marilyn Crispell's more recent stuff (e.g. the Annette Peacock album)

if you're willing to push it a bit, some of Guillermo Gregorio's Hatology releases, specifically Background Music with Mats Gustafsson and Kjell Nordesen

Told you I wasn't much of a cool fan but am sure I can dig up more if I actually paw through the collection. :-)

First time I've seen Mats Gustafsson as a suggestion for "cool/mainstream" jazz. Happy New Year, Walt!

I assumed as much, Buckeye...I was referring to your secret not any perceived secret Father Thorne is [wrongly] attempting to correct me on.

I dunno, Mats is a major Warne Marsh fan (and there are influences in his playing). According to the liner notes, Gregorio lived in LA for a year and visited and jammed with Marsh almost weekly. From the liner notes:

Of course _Background Music_ isn't straight cool jazz. Gregorio: "I've been trying to combine that sound with new musical concepts, not ones from the 40s and 50s."

I want to say that Gregorio's _Red Cubed_ has a couple cool tunes on it as well but haven't heard that one in a few years.

I'll got out on a limb and say that both Gregorio and Gustaffson have listened to a lot of Giuffre as well.

Not that I really expect buckeye will dig it ... though you never know. (Maria Schneider I think he probably would dig). I'm just being contrary and always annoyed by threads that ask for rec's and almost everything is 40+ years old. (yes, it's reasonably appropriate in this case)

Check out Connie Crothers and related artists too -- more the Tristano school than "cool" per se, but should be dug by those into cool I'd think.
