That's too bad. His recent album "Tricycles" with this trio is pretty good, I think. I've enjoyed Coryell quite a bit over the years. He tends to change styles frequently and I've like some more than others. I didn't realize that Julie still sings with him. As you said, she doesn't have much of a voice if I remember correctly from one of his earlier Vanguard albums.
Both Egan and Wertico are former members of Pat Metheney's groups, if you were looking for more from them.

Erie, Pa!?!?!? You guys get a lot more national acts than Cleveland does. Did you go to see Lindsey Horner this summer?
I'm sorry that Coryell delivered such a stinker; when I was first in Cleveland in the early 70's I used to go see him all the time at the late and lamented Smiling Dog Saloon, where he and other acts used to appear for the better part of a week. He was very instrumental in getting me interested in, ultimately, the type of music I listen to today.
Having said that I realize he's capable of wildly uneven performances but when he is on, he is very good.

I had to work the day that Lindsey Horner was in Erie, otherwise I would have been there. We do get some national acts. A year ago to the day of the Larry Coryell show Joe Lovano came to town. Both shows, with each of them available with a pricey dinner or without, were big successes, which was heartening. People were standing in the back at the Lovano show. In March, James Carter will be coming here.
I'd consider picking up Tricycles, as I heard that it was good, and like I said, I really dug Paul Wertico and would like to hear more of Egan in order to form an opinion.
BTW, BFrank, this wife was named Tracey. Being as she is about my age (maybe a few years older, I am 25), I think this was a new wife. Having her sing and then dedicating a song in the next set to her (and then sabotaging the bass feature) seemed quite overly indulgent. Also, what PMG cd's with Wertico and Egan would you recommend? I imagine the presence of Wertico would have to light a fire under Pat's ass.

It seems like the Art Museum gets some national acts on a sporadic basis; I remember ROVA playing there within the last year or so plus somebody else I was interested in.

Guess I haven't kept up with Larry's personal life.
I also can't say that I know about that many Metheny albums. One of his earliest albums - "The Pat Metheny Group" - from 1978 is a classic of sorts. I believe I read that Egan & Wertico were never in the band at the same time, either.

My good friend, drummer Danny Gottlieb, was in the earliest incarnations of the PMG with Mark Egan and Lyle Mays. Great band!
First Circle was the first album which featured Paul Wertico, a relationship with Metheny which would last almost two decades. Bassist Steve Rodby had replaced Mark Egan at that point in time, I believe.
Danny and Mark have done some interesting projects together over the years, founding the group Elements in 1982.

Thanks for the reference to As We Speak, David. I'll have to add that one to my list.

Egan plays with Gottlieb on Joe Beck's not too fusion-y trio album, "Just Friends". Available on eMusic, FWIW.

Thats a pretty harsh review, but I guess u called it like u saw it. I worked w/Coryell back in the late 70's early 80's, and he was always a smokin player.
Always gave the sideguys lottsa room. Emily Remler was on some of those.
Captain Hate...I used to frequent the Smilen Dog Saloon also, thought it was the greatest. Saw so many great cats there. I even still have the flyers they used to send out around here somewhere.

Glad to hear from somebody that shares some memories; it was my favorite club for a number of reasons: As I mentioned, acts would appear there for the better part of a week; since I wasn't swimming in cash at the time I would go in the middle of the week when the cover charge was really cheap. Plus the crowds were pretty small so you could talk to the performers at the bar between sets. Being a lot younger I could get by on much less sleep so I would stay out until the wee hours. When I think of the people I saw there: Coryell, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, Cannonball Adderly, Lovano & his old man (as a warmup group), Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers, Luther Allison, Louden Wainwright III. I know I'm forgetting a few. I missed Miles Davis because I figured it would be too damn crowded and, for some reason, missed Keith Jarrett. It was a truly sad day when it closed.

I agree regarding "Tricycles"
Three or four summers ago, this trio was the best set of the weekend that I witnessed at San Jose Jazz Festival.......go figure?

Egan recorded and produced a 2 CD set [2006 release] that's really good from my perspective, with long time running mate Gottlieb and John Abercrombie.

I had Egan on the show upon it's release.
It's among my faves of the year from those that came across my radar screen!
