Top Ten Living Tenors w/new list
Updated the list. We are 228 (members), I think there should be more than 38 votes. But again, everyone's free not to vote.
This list includes 30, we can see who comes up in the top 10 and then vote later on that list to have a sense of what we feel to be the top ten living tenor players and also our preferences within that list.

You should put an end date on this so we can then close the poll

Yes, I probably should have done that. I see that moderators (i.e. you) can moderate the poll and you can just choose an appropriate date to close the poll.
P.S. What is wrong Scott?

Still no Daniel Carter! I guess maybe I'm the only one who thinks he should be on that list, so I'll digress.

all fabulous...and because some have not heard them, or of them, doesn't mean one can't be the greatest. Fame=Greatness?
And how about Illinois Jacquet's tenor-playing brother, Massachussets Jacquet?

I've been wondering lately why certain players don't seem to get much talk, like Billy Harper, an absolutely wonderful tenor.

Gary, I agree on Billy Harper (in fact your post led me to dig out Somalia, which is n/p); it seems like he gets absolutely no critical run. He's always been perceived as being out there on the fringe just waiting to explode (I think he was on the initial Black Saint release and his Soran-Bushi release on Denon achieved cult status) but for whatever reason his career has been stuck in neutral. He's got amazing chops and was unfairly stigmatized a while back as a Clonetrane; his releases never fall below a certain standard. Other than his gigs with Randy Weston, he gets no exposure. Why people continue to fawn over the boring (to me) Charles Lloyd and ignore Harper; well, I guess that's why I'm not an opinion maker...

Billy Harper INDEED!
Billy Harper is a major, MAJOR voice on tenor who's been a heavy favorite of mine since the early 1970s. My hunch (and a hunch is all it is) is that his career with American labels got stalled due to a combination of political/industry "blacklisting" due to his associations with Max Roach and Strata-East, and his own absolute unwillingness to compromise his music in a time (mid-late 70s) when all the American labels with "presence", major and indie alike, were looking for material with a least a modicum of "crossover" appeal. Weren't gonna be no booty-shakin' to "Cry Of Hunger"...
But for those of us with a few years on us (and turntables and the luck to find his importe albums), Harper has DEFINITELY been one of the major voices of the last quarter-century as a player, and perhaps even moreso as a composer (he definitely has a totally distinctive voice as a writer, strong, soulful, and very "specific" in terms of structuring his pieces). The guy has been a major inspiration for me, if not so much literal playing style as just being a beacon of strength, integrety, and spiritual focus, for quite a while now. Long may he live.

He's also a JC artist and you can get his CDs through his website here, direct, with most of the bread going to him. You'll also get a mailing included from his fan club. Which I'm joining.

Still no mention of George Coleman, Archie Shepp, Benny Golson, or a personal relatively unheralded favorite, Bennie Wallace.
Yet I still see Boots Randolph's name. What is that about?

Ok, Boots Randolph was not really meant to be there but,
I did check and think of Coleman, Golson, and Wallace and many others that were mentioned. I had in mind top ten living tenors and more specifically, as players and not necessarily composers. I also looked at the recorded outputs of the players and tried to select those with a sizeable output.
As to my selection, some may agree and others may not (and they obviously don't). Unless you do a list of 100 (and maybe not even then) you cannot hope for exhaustion of candidates.
I think the list is representative (young lions, beboppers, free players - a little biased here since the active board members are, postboppers, and contemporary players).
Those who do complain that their favorite players, or a number of majro voices, are missing from the list can at least let us know who their preferred player among this list of (around) 30 is. I'll surely be the first to complain about the omission of my favorite player(s) from any upcoming poll lest fellow members think my knowledge of jazz is not up to par.
