REVERB-B-B-B-B-B!

When I contemplate of reverb, I think of ... Slim Harpo!

Tip on in, baby!

Slim Harpo's grave is in a pretty cool spot, if you're ever down that way:

The 6+ minute version of "Miserlou" here is tops in the insane reverb dept. IMO. Starts out in relatively tame Dick Dale territory & then goes completely nuts. For a slice of proof check out the killer mp3 sample over at the AMG listing for the disc.

Also, tons of squelchy reverb on the obscure Hendrix tape comp EARLY INSTRUMENTALS, esp. the cuts "Level" and "Hornets Nest."

Just plug one of these in and you've got all the reverb you need!

Bo Diddley got some awesome reverb on his setup. I always liked how the Stones echoed that with their take on "Mona."

Springsteen's reverb on "She's the One" ranks with some of the best uses.

Best over-the-top use of reverb: Stan Freberg's "Heartbreak Hotel"

Mission Of Burma - Trem Two

Is that reverb? Or is that some other effect?

Anyway that song rocks.

Actually it weren't just Slim Harpo - the whole J Miller/Excello schtick was heavily larded with reverb and/or echo. Silas Hogan and Lightnin' Slim were right up there. And a man who influenced that whole south Louisiana blues thing, Lightnin' Hopkins, was no slouch in that department, either.

I spent a very enjoyable (lazy) afternoon at work yesterday doing Pandora searches on instrumental pop, so a lot of Duane Eddy and Link Wray and so on came up.

An interesting piece of trivia: Bernie Besman got that spooky echo effect on the early John Lee Hooker records by placing a microphone in the toilet bowl.

For a very cool and nostalgic look at reverb, among many things associated with the brilliant Les Paul, here's a link to two lengthy interviews conducted at the Smithsonian Institution.

There's an intro and two parts of the program, which totals over one hour in length.
