It's (WHRB) Orgy time again!!
Twice annually, Harvard's radio station devotes a month to extended blocks of airtime devoted to particular artists or styles. This month features a number of wonderful choices, most immediately, a 22.5-hour Tomasz Stanko orgy, from 12:30-10pm this Sunday, January 7, continuing from 5am-1pm on Monday, January 8, and concluding from 5-10am on Tuesday, January 9. You can listen locally at 95.3FM, or online at www.whrb.org, where you can also get a complete schedule.

Hi Jason,
Thanks! A musician friend of mine is a big fan of Tomasz's music, as well as being a friend of Tomasz's. I've already emailed him the information you posted.

Hi Marla,
I'm sorry that we haven't had a chance to meet yet, though Patti and I were introduced to your Mom a few years ago in L.A. at a gig by our dear friend, Valerie Bishop.
Hopefully, we'll have a chance to meet sometime soon.

I hadn't seen the guide, but I accidentally caught some of the "Cello Sonatas Since 1950" orgy yesterday. Heard some Britten and some Schnittke.

There are major orgies and minor orgies. The biggest ones this go-round are all classical: Toscanini, Sibelius, and Grieg. There's also a Ron Carter, a West Side Blues (Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, and Magic Sam), and a Jim Pepper among the smaller ones.

one wild/impressive thing on here is on the 14th, 9+ hours of Corrupted. I didn't realize there was quite that much out there, I have most of it. Sisco, this one has your name on it...

After much scrolling on the full WHRB schedule, I discovered Jim Pepper's Orgy next Friday, January 12th at 6:00am, hardly a great time for an audience, and especially difficult for his friend in Alaska.
_______________________________________________________________
Friday, January 12 midnight THE SONIG ORGY LABEL (cont.)
6:00 am THE PEPPER’S POWWOW ORGY
Jim Pepper was a Muskogee Creek and Kaw American Indian saxophone player, and is credited with the first real fusion of tribal music with jazz and rock. Along with his own four albums as a bandleader, he was an integral member of several ensembles led by some of the premiere musicians in the free jazz movement, such as Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. He was one of the most prominent Native American jazz musicians, and his heritage is uniquely manifested in his music, which ranges from free jazz, to rock, to traditional Creek and Kaw tribal songs. His most popular album is entitled "Pepper’s Powwow," and that album not only set the tone for the rest of his career, but marked the first recording of his most popular song, "Witchi Tai To." Pepper has had a profound and lasting effect on the jazz world, and this orgy will be a tribute to his memory and his substantial contribution to the jazz world.
________________________________________________________________
Any chance of someone out there being kind enough to record this for Peppercorn? I'll be happy to compensate you for your time, CD and shipping cost.
ps: I don't know who wrote this blurb, but Jim's most popular album was certainly not Pepper's Pow-Wow. Ludicrous.

Jason, I've really been enjoying the Tomasz Stanko orgy today. I wish they'd offer some insight as to which albums and musicians we're hearing, though. I believe that they're presenting Tomasz's recordings chronologically, from past to present.
Thanks again for the heads up.

Man, I realize that this is a college station, but don't the announcers at WHRB use headphones?
I heard what was supposed to be some back announcing of tracks and musicians where the music level was not reduced and the young male "announcer" talked over it at such a low level that most of what he said was not discernible. I'd have preferred that he not talk over the music anyway, but this was truly painful to experience, not to mention mostly useless and annoying.
Otherwise, this afternoon's listening has been marvelous.

Keep in mind this is Harvard. The jocks are just typical overprivileged potheads.

Ron, have you tried to contact/email someone at the station? (I'm pretty sure poster Ryan B. has moved on, though.) They were pretty receptive to whatever assistance I could offer for the Giuffre orgy, which was limited a quick mind dump (and the loan of a dozen CDs) twenty minutes before the orgy started.

No I haven't. bostontricky.
I hope to hear some of the Jim Pepper Orgy tomorrow and give the station a call and thank them for their efforts while offering some constructive criticism.

Listening now and liking what I'm hearing.
Think I'll check out the Meridian Arts Ensemble orgy tomorrow night, too. They sound interesting: a brass quintet with percussion playing the music of Zappa, Bach, Babbitt, Hendrix, and Afro-cuban and South American music.
