Burlington Discover Jazz Festival 2007

The lineup is amazingly solid for this early in the year. And the variety is extraordinary.

The Flynnspace performances are as intriguing as we'd hope, knowing what's been offered there in years past - and there's a marquee booking for upstairs which will draw some new audiences and get a lot of nice buzz going.

Next year's the 25th anniversary of Discover Jazz ...(!)

I can't wait for the festival. Please tell me that the Roy Hargrove Big Band will make it up this year (he'll be in Poughkeepsie on June 8th).

Hi Bill Barton!

Gary - I hope to see you at BassDrumBone.

I'm very happy to finally get Jean Derome to Burlington. We've been working on it for several years now.

...anybody going to Montreal? For ICP Orchestra? For FIJM?

Cheers,
David Beckett

Chaz -- I'm waiting on a mare to foal and then for all of that to settle down. Waiting now for more than a week. I'm here at home til that's over but I hope to get out for BassDrumBone Thursday night. I'll be pretty disappointed otherwise, Ray being my favorite musician, and I don't get around much anymore.

Eddie Palmieri & crew was great. Brian Lynch and Conrad Herwig both played thier hearts out.

I was particularly happy to find Kenny Garrett's band hitting so hard tonight. Both previous times Garrett has played Burlington, I thought he didn't catch fire, which was frustrating because I've seen him play so well elsewhere, and sung his praises so loudly.

They played largely material from Beyond The Wall. Which meant Garrett and Pharoah Sanders could play out of that Trane/Tyner bag they know so well. And play they did. Drummer Jamire Williams soaked his shirt entirely by the end of the first number, and the challenge was set forth: Play like you mean it. They did. Bravo.

Two nights (and days) down, 8 to go.

Thanks for your report, Chaz.

I fully respect Eddie Palmieri, and was not surprised by your response to him, along with Kenny Garrett.

So, are you saying that Pharoah Sanders was part of the scene, too?

Hi Ron!

Yes - The band was billed as The Kenny Garrett Quartet with special guest Pharoah Sanders. More or less the Beyond the Wall lineup without Hutcherson.

My son and I are going to hear Magic Slim and Bettye Lavette on Thursday night, which means we have to miss Ray, Mark, and Gerry. It was a tough choice, but never having seen Slim, one of my favorite bluesmen, perform before decided it.

Roots - Enjoy! Those choices (Blues Tent vs Ray Anderson; Skatalites vs Pizzarelli) can be tough...

Sorry I'll miss you, Chaz. I'm bringing Triptych Myth to JSC this fall, so maybe you can make the perilous ride into the hinterlands of Lamoille County for it.

Permit me a word for The Miguel Zenon Quartet.

First - the chance to hear a very lightly amplified group in a small room is always a real pleasure. But when the group is of this quality - it's a rare treat, even for a nerdy concert maven like me.

Zenon played about 3 feet from his microphone all night and bathed the audience in the sound of his alto. A lot of us seldom get the chance to be reminded that saxophones are woodwind instruments. So when a guy like Zenon produces a tone like Frank Morgans - combined with his ferocious musical instincts - it's a joy. Add bassist Hans Glawishnig with a mic on a stand in front of the "f-holes" on his bass, and a drummer who starts the set playing with his fingertips - and you've got glorious sound, friends - right here in River City.

And Aaron Parks subbed for Louis Perdomo, which was a treat simply because I'd been told to keep an eye out for Parks recently - and there he was 10 feet away.

These Flynnspace shows (150+ seats) are wonderful - headliners be danged.

Jean Derome tonight!

Roots - I've spread the rumour about Tryptic Myth among the assembled old radio hands in Flynnspace since you posted this. Several DJ friends asked for dates so they could spread the word.

Is there a place where the JSC Jazz and Performing Arts offerings are listed? It's not always easy to find this sort of gig on The JSC website...

I'd like to (at least) re-establish email contact with you. I'll check the email address attached to this bbs and I can be in better touch!

Thanks,
David

We're still working on a date, but it should be either 9/7 or 9/14. I'll keep you posted.

I'll PM my email address. I'm not sure which one's listed at JC.

I'm really looking forward to tonight's Magic Slim gig!

The past two nights of music were great. Montreal double bill on Tuesday and Esperanza Spalding last night. Esperanza is quite the bassist...
