Since krautrockers Faust is one of my favorite groups I was very sad and surprised to read this on british musicmagazine Mojo´s homepage:
"MOJO is sad to announce that Uwe Nettelbeck the mentor, producer and overseer of Krautrock legends Faust, died on January 17. A one-time music journalist, Nettelbeck formed Faust in Wumme, Germany, in 1971 with a view to creating a “new western music”, devoid of Anglo-Saxon rock’n’roll influences.
Holed up in a converted schoolhouse, Nettelbeck, along with Hans Joachim Irmler, Jean Hervé Peron, Werner ‘Zappi’ Diermaier, Rudolf Sosna, Gunther Wusthoff, and Armulf Meifert embarked upon a musical revolution. From their eponymously titled 1971 debut to 1973's Faust IV, via 1973's legendary “only 49p” Faust Tapes, the first wave of Faust was a revolutionary cut-and-paste mischung of odd pastoral pop, hypnotic funk soundscapes and trippy demented electronic noise.
However, following a chaotic and miserable 1974 tour, and after running up huge bills at Giorgio Moroder's Araballa studios for Faust V, the band were dropped by Richard Branson Virgin Records and, following a decision to rescue the Faust V tapes from the Arabella grounds, the band were arrested, Nettelbeck left and Faust Mk 1 disbanded. Nevertheless, their influence on modern music remains indelible and can be heard in the work of My Bloody Valentine, Tortoise and Julian Cope who once described Faust as “the greatest thing ever.”
Jean-Hervé Peron had this to say about the passing of the creative force behind one of the greatest bands of the mid-70s:
"Besides being a sharp-witted but yet charming and loving husband, father and grandfather, he was an outstanding cook, a writer who always generated deep emotions and interest, and a genius, selfless music producer. Thank you Uwe for all you have done for our music. Faust is your work, no doubt ! Your work will outlast all of us. May your soul rest in peace. My sincere sympathy to his family Petra, Anouchka, Sandra, Elisha and Elsa.""
