Dennis! If my incredibly busy life slows down in time, I may just have to make the Detroit show.

Hey Dennis, hope you enjoy your trip to my hometown (Detroit) and my home state. Sounds like a great time. You also get to play on the bill with my man Faruq Z. Bey. Has Pat Frisco heard about this?

Oh, and it's off Michigan Ave., between I-96 (aka the Jeffries Freeway) and Grand Blvd. (as it's universally called - there are other streets named Grand in Detroit).

The Bohemian National Home looks like a really cool venue. I found a couple of nice photos.

Great that it's been rehabilitated, too.

Here's a link to a nice article about the history of "Bo House", as it's affectionately known.

Yes indeed. And yes, a great space. Though some of the fussier folks in and around town (more to the famous college town to the west of us) don;t seem to want to get their shoes a bit dirty. Joel Peterson has ressurected this beautiful old building and saved it from ruin. It still needs a good deal of work but it's fine for those of us who desire a place to really hear the music in a comfortable setting, no hassles, just come as you are and do as you please. There have already been some great concerts there already. Anybody within an hour of Detroit should do themselves a favor and enjoy an evening there. We hope to have Rob Brown Trio there in early June.

Thanks for the tips, Al. We play in Faruq's presence twice this trip. The boys are really looking forward to it.

Sounds like a great atmosphere. It's getting interestinger!

We are playing around Michigan this time around, so if people from up north a ways can't make it to Detroit, they can still catch us...here's our schedule so far.

Dennis, I'm trying to envision concerts in Alpena, Escanaba, Harrison, and Roscommon. You're breaking new ground. Good luck!

I'd heard from the Community College coordinators for this tour that we are going into the New Frontier, especially since we are playing a combination of Latino and Jazz music as Banda de Brujos, and we will be addressing immigration issues and ethnicity, and tying it all together in one package. They tell me that many students that far north have never heard this kind of music.

We're working hard on the music, especially since our accordionist flaked out on us! The two horns will be handling the accordion lines, and it's difficult music. When all is said and done, I think, like you do, that it's going to be so good!

I don't know. I'll be in Michigan and Portugal before I come back to NY, I think. Unless something pops up all of a sudden!

This is part of an e-mail I got yesterday from one of the presenters: Kirtland Community College is a small rural college in the middle of the northern Michigan woods. We are planning to host you guys in the school’s student center...There is no stage in there. As far as cell phones, I am afraid the cell phones are not much of a use on campus because it is a heavily wooded area and there [are] not [many] towers close by.

Dennis, perhaps if you buy some of the local boys a shot of Jack and a Bud Light, you'll be invited back next hunting season. Just kidding! I'm sure it'll be a cool experience with some wonderful people.

Latino and jazz music programs featured at both MMCC locations
Gladwin County Record
Last updated: Tuesday, March 06th, 2007 05:47:02 PM

Dennis Gonzalez

HARRISON -- Mid Michigan Community College will host two musical programs.

Both events with be lead by Dallas musician Dennis Gonzalez. The events will take place on March 12 and 15.

On Monday, March 12, “Dennis Gonzalez Banda de Brujos” will perform music which represents the new trends in cross-cultural Mexican-based music. This performance will start at 1 p.m. in room 112 at the Mount Pleasant campus of MMCC.

Gonzalez will also comment on immigration and border issues, the important part music has played in the struggle, and how these issues have influenced new genres of music as Hispanics have moved northward, Americanized, and discovered old and new musical roots.

The program on Thursday, March 15 will consist of creative jazz and world music. Gonzalez’ jazz group, “Yells at Eels,” which includes his two sons, will perform first. Gonzalez will then join Detroit saxophonist and composer Faruq Z Bey and the Northwoods Improvisers to finish up the night’s entertainment. These performances will take place at the Harrison campus of MMCC at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Gonzalez is a renowned Jazz trumpeter. He has played and recorded with many contemporary jazz greats, including 23 CDs as a leader in diverse musical styles. He has performed and led workshops on several continents and the Caribbean. He is also a composer, writer, visual artist, educator, linguist, world traveler and radio producer.

The two musical programs are sponsored by MMCC’s Global/International Program and the Michigan Global Awareness Consortium.

Both MMCC events are open to the public and free of charge. For more information, contact Jim VanderMey at jvanderm@midmich.edu.
