Italian pianist Stefano Bollani’s ECM solo debut and charismatic personality are sure to establish him as a major jazz talent. The new album features 16 miniatures, full of lyricism and flashing wit, and includes his own compositions as well as recognizable songs such as The Beach Boys' "Don't Talk" and a Scott Joplin rag - all interpreted in his personal style.
On February 6th, "Piano Solo" will be released in the United States.
Also on February 6th, Stefano Bollani will perform an album release concert in New York City at the Teatro at Columbia University's Italian Academy. The Teatro is located at 1161 Amsterdam Avenue just south of 118th St. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for students and seniors. Call 212.854.1623 or email rw2115@columbia.edu for reservations and information.
Jazzcorner and ECM have 10 copies for your enjoyment and review. Since "Piano Solo" has already been released internationally, this group cd review is open to North America residents only.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editorial Reviews from Amazon.com:
The shadow of pianist Keith Jarrett is long and deep, still hovering over musicians who are half his age. One of them is Stefano Bollani, a thirtysomething Italian pianist who has worked with trumpeter Enrico Rava. As the title suggests, this is strictly a solo album carving out a mood as much as a persona. Bollani and producer Manfred Eicher bring together a mix of jazz standards, classical works, and originals, with free-flowing improvisations that approach, but don't quite attain, Jarrett's rhapsodic extrapolations. Like Jarrett, Bollani has a taste for standards. He covers early-20th-century pop like "For All We Know," taking it out in an increasingly angular improvisation. But he indulges in slightly more contemporary fare as well, covering the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds track "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" and "Antonia," a moody ballad by Italian songwriter Antonio Zambrini. I've never heard the original, but in Bollani's hands it becomes a deep well of improvised introspection. Bollani evinces more of a classical touch than Jarrett, even when he isn't adapting a classical theme, as he does in the lyrical and romantic "On a Theme by Sergey Prokofiev." From Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" to the arch strains of his original "Sarcasmi," Stefano Bollani covers a lot of bases, living between high art and the cocktail lounge, creating a music that hints at deeper terrain, though it often settles into a pleasant middle ground. --John Diliberto
Product Description:
Bollani explores the history of jazz and beyond with an almost encyclopedic array of styles and inflections, though he always stays true to his traditional jazz roots The album is comprised of 16 miniatures, full of lyricism and flashing wit.

Nice idea, Lois. There's an Edward Vesala thread from last year that could maybe also be moved to this forum.

I'm sorry Swinger, since it's already released in Europe -- it's only open to North America.

I hope to be in time to take advantage of this offer.
Never fear about North America's "culture", Sand. It's only our government with which you should be concerned.

Madame Lois --
Rene's out in the Pacific Ocean somewhere. He's further from Europe than we are! Maybe cut him some slack and send him an album, too?

Maybe the second. I sent mine out at 2:30 AM on the the 31st. And I haven't heard from Lois, either. But usually she just waits until the list is done and then she posts it.

I'm sorry folks... I should have given a deadline which is Feb 6 and then winners will be chosen at random. It's not quite fair to do first come first serve since not everybody checks Speakeasy everyday.
Peace and light

Will the folks picked from random be picked from the five left, or the original 10?

Pretty neat trick, Steve -- since she posted the annoucement two hours after you sent your request out. I always knew I needed to keep a sharp eye out on you.

Dennis I feel if we make enough noise, and show them how much love there is for them -- maybe ECM will decide they will up the number available for free.

Lois,
Will an ECM rep be joining us here -- to talk about new releases, the ECM philosophy, etc.?

Lois, do you think we can get Steve a free copy just for coming up with the most clever reason for getting one?
Don't worry, Steve, we'll make sure you get a copy.

Pete-
It's the following post which is causing the confusion and consternation. It sounded as if they're going, going . . . almost gone!

To clarify - when I posted that I did have 5 left but I usually I put first come first serve if that's the case or I put a deadline. I neglected to do either. My error. I also usually put winners chosen at random. I was hurrying to get the ECM forum up with this delightful perk. I'm sorry if it caused any confusion, and I understand how it did.
So be that as it may - I will take back the Feb 6 deadline and now announce the winners for review in my next post.
