Let's see...
John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio: Traneing In
I have the DCC gold CD. I have no doubts that this version won't even come close to Hoffman's mastering
Jackie McLean: 4, 5 and 6
I have the US K2 CD. Sounds very nice to me.
Miles Davis Quintet: Cookin’
Ditto "Traneing In" above: I have both the DCC gold CD and the Audio Fidelity SACD.
Pat Matino: El Hombre
This one could do for an upgrade... if this remaster is truly an upgrade. I am skeptical. The original OJC CD sounds pretty good.
Sonny Rollins: Plus Four
I have the original OJC CD and the Mobile Fidelity SACD.

As noted, only one of these titles is truly in need of an upgrade and even that would be marginal at best.

Who picks these titles? That person must've flunked Marketing 101. Why pick titles that have already appeared in audiophile releases? Pick titles from the "standard" OJC catalog. These titles make absolutely no sense. I honestly can't see me or anyone I know buying them.

So far, I tried two Prestige RVGs which I already had on previous CD editions.

- Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds is better on the OJC, because the RVG is maximised, making the bass sound blurry. The other parts of the frequency spectrum are ok, but no better than on the OJC. Unlike the K2 vs OJC comparision, there is no improved transparency, detail or dynamics. It's just louder.

- Oliver Nelson - Screamin’ the Blues sounds very close to the version in the Eric Dolphy box set.

So the Prestige RVGs sound decent, but there is no reason to upgrade. The remastering is much less controversial than on RVG's Blue Note remasters.

FWIW, these are available on eMusic now. Yet, I wonder how much the sonic upgrades might be compromised by MP3 encoding.

I discovered 32 RVG Remasters on DeepDiscount today . . . each on sale for $8.97. I was a bad boy and ordered a few.

Among them . . .
