Only On 89.7

Back on October 22 I produced a feature on my program, Jazz From Studio Four called "Only on 89.7"
This program featured music recorded, over the years, by WGBH in our live performance studio and out at clubs and concerts in the Boston area.
The first two hours of this five hour Special is now available on demand from our website. Just go to

wgbh.org
wgbh.org/jazz
wgbh.org/webcasts

Not only will you hear great locally Boston-based musicians like Matt Gordy, Eula Lawrence and The Bebop Guitars but you'll also hear Shirley Horn, Gary Burton/Makoto Ozone, the Bill Evans Trio and the Woody Shaw/Louis Hayes Quintet, among many others
None of this music is available commercially. ONLY on 89.7
Enjoy!

PS These webcasts keep changing every few weeks so keep coming back

Coleman Hawkins on Demand

Jazz Fans:
Back on November 21, 2004 I produced a 5-hour radio Special on Coleman Hawkins to celebrate his 100th birthday. The first 2-hours of that program is now available on demand at the WGBH website. It will be up for at least a week or so. Go to:

www.wgbh.org/webcasts

and click on Jazz from Studio Four

The following is the blurb used to describe the show in our monthly magazine.

Enjoy!

November 19 BEAN’S TALKIN’: Coleman Hawkins practically invented the jazz tenor saxophone. To celebrate his 100TH birthday (b. 11/21/1904), we’ll devote our program to his music and words. We have the rare 2-lp set called “Coleman Hawkins: A Documentary” where Hawk (Bean was another nickname) talks about his life and career in music, from his early days
with Fletcher Henderson to his travels to Europe in the 1930s to the arrivals of modern jazz in the 1940s and rock and roll in the 1950s.

Yes indeed Lois (man, nothing gets by you!!)

Pianist Steve Kuhn is the subject of my show a week from Friday night, March 25th (his birthday is the 24th)

That should be a fun show to do also.

I spoke with both Steve and Bill today and they are very pleased to be acknowledged for their contributions to our community and getting some radio time. There's a lot of competition out there for air time but they both deserve it

Tune in

Happy Birthday to Steve Kuhn, one of my all time faves on the piano. His version of "Zingaro" with Lewis Nash is just a killer.

Besides, who else can say "Yeah, I used to play with Coltrane. Then I left, and they got this McCoy Tyner fella..."

Also, Steve Kuhn was obviously the original inspiration for the "Cherches Look":

1955 was 50 years ago

Friday night, May 6th from 7p-midnight on my radio program, "Jazz from Studio Four" I will be celebrating the Golden anniversaries of music made by Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Hank Mobley, Benny Carter, Billie Holiday, Phil Woods, Lennie Tristano, Jimmy Giuffre and dozens more.
Music recorded 50 years ago this year.
Bird had just died, Cannonball just arrived on Savoy and this music has come down through the years to become timeless classics.

Tune in to 89.7FM if you're in the Boston/Eastern New England area or log on to our website

Enjoy

Thanks Steve ..for reminding me that I graduated from HIGH SCHOOL fifty years ago!!

however, then , I thought I was some kinda hots**t drummer and was really into big bands like Woody Herman, Kenton, etc. ..

but, during the summer of '55 , I got a crash course in Bird, Diz, Bud Powell from a black alto player named Wilbert Dyer in Canton OH . He was a bad junkie, but a very nice dude who took what was a bunch of young white kids and packed our skulls with the rudiments of bebop in a three month whirlwing of nightly sessions....( that were in fact intense lessons )!

In the beginning of the summer, my favorite drummer was Buddy Rich ..by September , it was Max and Philly Joe!

wow! what a summer! ..thanks for bringing back the memories!

What Fun!

2 years back KSJS had it's 40th anniversary of being on the air since 1963.

Of the 5 current music departments now assembled, the only format was 'alive' then was jazz, so I enthusiastically got the OK to do a all 1963_four [4] hour program, which was an absolute blast to put together.

It once again taught me that no matter how much I may continue to learn and THINK I may know, there's still SO MUCH music continuously being put as to make even a single year a huge sampling full of discoveries [at least for me it was].

Great Scott! 1955 was the year that George McFly punched out Biff Tannen at the big dance and lightning struck the old clock!

'55 was a great year, almost as good as 57.

Hey Steve, don't overlook the great jazz that was coming out of my part of the country. The Lighthouse All=Stars deserve a whole hour!

Hey, my dad is from North Canton...

He doesn't like jazz, though.

Big area for polkas and "cordeens " in the 50s!

Ha--well, in my dad's favor, I never heard him say anything about liking polkas.

I wish that I was there, but I had to work the day of the party. Just as equally I wish that I was listening/there when you did that 4 hour show.

Incidentally the chief engineer at my work place is a KSJS alumnus and he used to play jazz when he was there (in the 1960's).

You are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too kind!!!!! Not to mention one of the funniest and most wonderful people I know!

I would love to hear from one person stating that Mr. Marquette was a fine example of human kindness - don't think that is ever going to happen! I still would have loved to meet him. He was a part of the "scene" at that time, loved or unloved, right?
